Mount Maunganui

Your driver/guide will take you on an interesting journey through the different aspects of life in Tauranga. From the forming of the landscape, the arrival of man and the founding of the city, through to the different produce grown in the province and what modern life is like in the area. Departing from the port gates you will travel through Mount Maunganui township past Mauao the iconic landmark mountain and one of New Zealand’s most popular beaches "The Mount Main Beach" home of surfing, professional beach volleyball and surf lifesaving competitions.

Tauranga

Crossing over the Tauranga harbour bridge you will go through the Port of Tauranga and hear about how industry has shaped Tauranga to be the busiest port in New Zealand and see stunning views of the harbour and Matakana Island. In Tauranga you will see some of the earliest European settlement buildings in New Zealand, beautiful gardens and hear about the settlement of Maori and Europeans in the Bay of Plenty, creating the city of Tauranga as it is today.

Minden Lookout

Leaving Tauranga, you will head west to the foothills of the Kaimai Ranges to see stunning views of the area with a stop for lunch, some shopping and an opportunity to taste handpicked teas sourced locally and from around the world. A short drive will take you to a Kiwifruit orchard where you will hear about the Kiwifruit industry, sample its fruit including the famous gold kiwifruit, see Avocado trees, hear how this amazing tree produces one of the worlds super foods and sample some of the local avocado produce. Afterwards we head back to Mount Maunganui to finish the tour.

Great Half day tour of Tauranga

We just did the the half day scenic tour and kiwi fruit tasting. Russell was an awesome tour guide and a wealth of knowledge on the culture and history of Tauranga and New Zealand. Stopped of at a nice little cafe, great slices and coffee.We never knew Kiwi fruit grew on a vine and there were so many varieties before this tour. I was was very informative and a great day out. Thanks for sharing your insights and passion for New Zealand Russell.

We had a 4 hour Tour with Russell today... Very impressive...! We thoroughly enjoyed the tour packed full of all the best views and stories to go with all the sights visited and in transit. Russell could just as easily have been a history professor with all the knowledge and history that he provides, intertwined with his good humor makes for a great outing and beautiful day out!

If you arrive by cruise ship with no plans for Tauranga, check out Russell Christian's Wicked Wanders tours. He's on the Pier (when his small group, mini van tours have room) where you can talk to him regarding his offerings. We wanted to get out of the city without going all the way (1 hour +) to Rotorua and his 4Hr Tauranga tour was perfect. Great mixture of city/landscapes/farms/food tastings and an odd ball visit to unique toilets! Russell was a perfect guide - we didn't get the "canned" history speech to sleep by, but a lively discussion mixing a bit of everything about the area and country. Appreciated his willingness to answer all questions and recommendations. His price was considerably less than the cruise ship for a very similar tour and we were a small group, not a bus load of 40! Highly recommended and I would book ASAP - we were very lucky he had openings.
