Fez is pure, Marrakesh is beautiful, but the Sahara (from Fez to Marrakesh) ... is pure, beautiful AND adventurous.
The van picked us up early in the morning in Fez and took us to Merzouga, with a few stops along the way. We were only 3 passengers and the driver (from Get your Guide), so we immediately functioned as a family! Attention: in Merzouga, you leave your larger suitcase (if any) together with the luggage of other Sahara travelers, and take only a small backpack for the one-night tent camp. We left Merzouga by atv to the camp, with sand boarding and sunset on the way. At the (luxury) tent camp immediate dinner (okay) and then entertainment in central sand square amid the tents: music, dancing, campfire and ambiance. Beware: the Sahara in January is COLD-COLD-COLD, both in the tents and outside! We slept in the tent with half a dozen blankets on top of us. Inside the tent there was a private bathroom with hot water and toilet. No heating. Next morning after breakfast in camp, back to Merzouga by camels, and sunrise on the way. In Merzouga we had our luggage back and left with our driver and van, destination: Ouarzazate. Enough of stops along the way for panorama, lunch, etc. Hotel stay in Ouarzazate: don’t expect much of it. Next day: bus ride with destination Marrakesh, including visit at Ait ben Haddou (traditional village, Unesco). In the afternoon the driver left us right in front of our hotel in Marrakesh. Conclusion: the 3-day trip is an interesting acquaintance with a different kind of nature (desert), Moroccan food and culture, very special sights and sites, nice people both Moroccans and tourists.
