Not out of conscious effort, but my husband and I have ended up visiting umpteen battlefields, forts, battleships, war cemeteries and homes of various historical generals and leaders on our travels. From Pearl Harbor to Fort Monroe, Little Bighorn to Fort De Soto and everywhere in between, we've been there.
Like many Americans I've had grandparents, aunts, uncles, and extended family going back every generation that we've traced that have served in US wars going back to the Revolutionary War.
I had to speed through some rooms to get to a spot where I was alone so I could catch my breath to stop the tears welling in my eyes.
I'm extremely critical of the US Military Industrial Complex and it makes me so angry and sad to see all the names of the people who died and their families ripped apart for the benefit of bankers, military contractors and politicians.
There are a lot of neat artifacts in here going back to WWI. My favorite artifact was the vest for a carrier pigeon.
If you're interested in politics or history or the military, this is a nice museum to stop at as an adult. I wouldn't bring small children here because the subject matter is too heavy.
