We had an amazing tour with our guide Daniel (well technically he is the farm manager, brains and brawn that makes the farm run) and Eulalia (she was our incredible translator) one glorious morning in January of 2025. The host/owner Mimi generously communicated all the necessary details to make the tour safe and comfortable.
Although neither of us is a coffee drinker, during our stay in Jardin we really wanted to get out into coffee country and better understand the beverage that caffeinates the world. We left with a tremendous new appreciation for coffee and the industry that is the primary source of income for so many of the local families.
After consuming a picked fresh from the tree in front of our eyes orange for breakfast we learned that coffee from this area has special and unique attributes. We learned about planting, maintaining and harvesting coffee. The criticality of the geography, land, altitude and weather were explained. We learned about fermentation, the process of washing coffee, the drying process and coffee distribution channels and challenges. There was plenty of opportunity to ask questions and learn about topics of personal interest (as a gardener I was fascinated by what can be done to help the coffee plants grow symbiotically with other plants that help them remain pest free, strong and healthy.)
Last but not least, we had a chance to sample the wonderful flavor that coffee from this unique set of conditions (if it was wine you’d likely call it the terroir) produces. As non-coffee consumers we each asked for a second cup of Finca Mariposa’s delicious coffee. We took advantage of the opportunity to purchase bags of the amazing smooth coffee to gift to our coffee drinking families since we can’t (yet) purchase it directly where we live.
As a bonus, we got to wave at Daniel’s father when we passed him in the jeep, and Eulalia introduced us to her mother as we were walking through the main square after the tour. We finished our morning with contacts/recommendations for other activities and places to eat. It really made the tour special to feel like we had made new friends and were personally somehow connected to the local community.
Take the tour, you really won’t regret it!
