Only a few dozen meters from the Cathedral of St. Jakov, there is a plateau below which there used to be a public city cistern, ie an accumulation of water. It was built by the people of Šibenik due to frequent droughts, but also frequent military sieges. The construction contract was concluded in 1446, and the construction was supervised by the famous Juraj Dalmatinac, best known for the neighboring Cathedral. The cistern could hold 28,000 barrels of water, and a special tax was introduced to build it.
On the plateau itself, ie its outer part, there are four wells, from which water could be pumped. The entire complex has been thoroughly renovated in recent years, so '4 wells' are today one of the most beautiful areas of Šibenik. In the underground, ie inside the complex there is an interesting cafe and wine bar. inside, guests will have the opportunity to see what the cistern looked like, the water filtration system and the 4 openings (crowns) through which fresh water was taken.
