Shikajima island is a small island that can be accessed in just 30 minutes from central Fukuoka. The townscape and lifestyle of the old fishing village still remains. It once played an important role as a key point for maritime trade. Many of the rituals held at Shigaumi Shrine, which has played an important role in the culture and history of this island, are rare even in Japan. In recent years, it has become a cycling spot loved by local Fukuoka cyclists as it allows you to tour around the coastline. The entire island is designated as Genkai National Park, where visitors can experience the magnificent natural scenery and the lifestyle and traditions of a fishing town.

Please disembark at the Shikashima Ferry Terminal of the Fukuoka City Ferry. You can arrive in 1 minute on foot. The torii gate at the entrance to the shrine is a landmark.

Shikajima is an island with a circumference of approximately 10 km. You can go around the coastline and enjoy the sea scenery. There are also old fishing villages and farming villages that remain, so you can enjoy the townscape of old Japan. -Helmet and lights are available for loan free of charge. - On the day of the event, please wear athletic shoes and clothes that are easy to move in.

Frictionless and very enjoyable as a bike rental should be.

Very frictionless. just had to scan a QR code and fill in a registration form and pay with my credit card (cash is also possible). The staff were very helpful and even noted some dangerous and interesting spots on the way. The bikes are also in perfect shape and the cost seems fitting for the offered service. Overall a very nice experience.

Shikanoshima Cycle and Cafe

The shikanoshima cycle is a terrific place to rent a bike. They speak great English and were super helpful. Also gave some directions and sights seeing stop ideas while touring around the island. The cycle route is very flat with one small hill. Like all japanese roads they are narrow, but the traffic is light and very respectful. At the end of our ride we had an excellent hot matcha latte at the bike shops in house Cafe.

These folks took good care of me. Set me up with a Trekking Bike and explained the sites to see. It’s was a wonderful Fukuoka day trip to a scenic island in the bay.

Lovely trip with good bikes and excellent hospitality. Beautiful island and easy and convenient roads for cycling. Highly recommend if you stay in Fukuoka!
