Overview

How will the world-famous opera Carmen be reimagined through the traditional Japanese art of Kabuki? With English subtitles, everyone can enjoy the show! Karume, an oiran living in Yoshiwara, and Carmen, a free-spirited woman who lived in Spain. One was sold into a cage.The other kept running from it. Their lives appear to be complete opposites— Yet both knew the desires of men, sometimes controlling them, sometimes being controlled. They were beautiful, strong—and lonely. Though they were loved, what they truly longed for was the right to choose their own destiny. What awaited them at the end of that wish— Was it tragedy? Or a proud and dignified end?As these two “Carmens” intersect on this stage, What form of “freedom” will you discover? Please enjoy the performance to the very end.

You sometimes wonder if some reviews are true. I booked this because the reviews are amazing. There are no stars below 4. I decided to book it. What a wonderful experience. And the reviews are absolutely well deserved. I love a live show. There is something about a live show that demands talents and skills. An artist’s ability cannot be faked in a live show. In this wonderful Karume Kabuki production, EVERYONE was wonderful, from the leading roles to the support roles, everyone was contributing their very best to the successful performance. The acting, the skills, and the emotions of the actors and actresses come through with wonderful satisfaction. Do not be concerned if you have never seen a Kabuki or opera before. While the show is in Japanese (as it should be), there are English subtitles, and you won’t miss anything. However, the most wonderful thing is after a while, you get the idea of the story, and you don’t need to rely on the subtitles anymore, because the actors and actresses are just that powerful and talented. Their expressions, subtle movements of their bodies, eye contacts, tones of their delivery are crossing the language barriers, and I found myself longing for more after the show. At the end of the show, you will have a chance to buy a program and get autographs and take photos with your favorite actors and actresses. I recommend it! The show is a very intimate setting. Depending on where you sit, you could be inches away from the actors at times. I loved every minute of it. Unfortunately, their season is over for now. If you want to catch them again, it will have to wait, but the wait will be very much worth it.

Karume Kabuki x Opera (10/10) - A stunning piece of independent theatre for visitors and locals alike to enjoy

Karume, a traditional Japanese Kabuki show inspired by the Western opera Carmen, was absolutely sensational. I spent just under two months in Japan, visiting relatives, and in all of my time there this show was surely one of the best experiences I had. Having never been to Kabuki before, this little production in the charming, lively neighbourhood of Asakusa proved the perfect introduction - informal enough for even complete beginners (and non-Japanese speakers) like me to get involved with the crowd participation elements (though there was no pressure on anyone to do so, should they not feel up to it). The performance itself was spectacular, with some beautiful, unforgettable acting which conjured both laughter and tears from the audience. Enishiya, the lead actor playing Karume, was jaw-droppingly brilliant; their mastery of 間 (Ma, the ability to deliver meaning in what's left unsaid) was a sight to behold. The play ran for a perfectly-weighted 90 minutes which left my friend and I in awe. If only I had more time in Japan (we saw Karume on our second-to-last day there) I'd have gone back to see the show several more times over. 10/10.
