Overview

This seasonal whale watching tour takes you aboard a 24-passenger sailing catamaran from Hervey Bay to Platypus Bay at K'gari (Fraser Island). Limited guests allows for a truly intimate tour with one on one conversations to hear about these majestic animals. An immersive platform lets you observe a humpback whale underwater while you listen to the male humpback whale sing by hydrophone. Morning and afternoon tea are served along with a buffet lunch and beverage during the full-day tour.

Itinerary

After hotel pickup in the morning, board the Blue Dolphin, a 38-foot (11.6-metre) eco-friendly catamaran departing Great Sandy Straits Marina at Hervey Bay. This modern and luxurious sailing vessel is well-appointed with plenty of shaded seating areas and wide, flat decks — perfectly suited for up to 24 passengers. This long-running and award-winning whale watching tour heads out to Platypus Bay, situated on the western side of K'gari (Fraser Island.) Marine life abounds in the region, from the little-known Australian humpback dolphins to the well-known humpback whales that visit during the winter months. Throughout the day you will be offered the opportunity to see the whales, including from an immersive platform. An informative talk is given by your skipper, who shares more than 30 years of experience working with marine mammals. Your guide's knowledge and passion of the animals and the marine environment ensures a unique experience. Reference material is also available along with a hydrophone on board to hear the migratory mammals underwater. An intimate day tour for those who want to be one of the few not the many.

Second visit just as good as the first!

This was my second visit with the Blue Dolphin and it was just as good as the first - even though it was later in the season as such, we had no trouble spotting and stopping and watching several different pods of whales doing their thing in the bay. The crew were very friendly and professional and the small number of people on the boat was great - you could strike up conversations rather than staying as strangers.

We loved the intimate group size, the crew are knowledgeable & attentive, they give 100% effort to ensure the day is enjoyable and that we experienced as much whale activity as possible.

It was a great day, saw lots of whale pods, and youngsters were frolicking. Anika and Cathy were just lovely, helpful and informative. They provided a lovely cold meat and salads lunch that was very filling. Coffee and tea all day. Went home happy and exhausted. Got some great pictures and videos.

5 star whale watching

We travelled from Sydney to Hervey Bay specifically to go whale watching and were not disappointed. Excellent day out, we saw lots of mummy and baby whales, our skipper and crew were excellent, the catering was perfect for the day, and the boat was spacious and comfortable. We liked going on this boat (versus larger tour boats) as you are closer to the water and it's a personalised experience. The weather was beautiful all day, calm waters, except on the return journey we encountered some bad weather, but our skipper and crew were utmost professionals and navigated the weather with skill and good cheer. It is an early morning start and a long day, which was fine for our teenage daughter, but probably not suitable for small kids. Would love to go again.
