Overview

The Black River Gorges National Park, 67.54 km² of pure, wild, nature. The heart of Mauritius island, home of many endemic species, both animal and floral. It offers a great discovery of the nature of the island. During this hike we will discover different viewpoints from which we can contemplate different parts of the park and its surroundings. Half-way up our climb, we discover the “Mare aux Joncs Gorge” that we like to call the “Bats Valley” because of the thousands of Mauritan Fruit-Bats we can observe there. On top of our ascension, at 400m above sea level we get an amazing sight on the West-Coast, its lagoons and beautiful villages amountains. From there, we start our back back down until the black-river where we can stop to enjoy a nice swim before continuing and reach back our starting point, where we’ve met a few hours earlier.

Best hike in Mauritius! Thank you so much Regine

The most amazing hike I’ve ever done. Our guide Regine Clain was one the best guide I’ve ever had and met in all of the excursions I’ve done. She was there to make sure we felt comfortable throughout the hike. She really went the extra mile by carrying my backpack 10 stars for Regine! Definitely request her as your guide should you book this excursion.

Epic hiking in Mauritius

Sometimes I avoid going with the highest rated operator simply because I’m a contrarian and I like to give the “little guys” a chance, but this is an instance where experience shows. My guide Gilles was literally born to be a guide: friendly, super knowledgeable, could tell when we wanted peace and when we wanted more info without asking, super fit, and very professional. Shifted between English and French at ease with our mixed lingo group and never seemed distracted or more interested in his phone (a common issue these days. Wish I had time to do another tour.

Trees, rivers and hills

Take a morning away from the beach and walk up the black river gorge. It’s a beautiful place and very secluded. Our guide Rowin was very knowledgeable explaining the vegetation, birds, bats and monkeys to you get to see. On the way he chatted a lot about the way of life, society, history and politics of Mauritius and he has a great sense of humour.

Great guided hike with Gilles - amazing views and wildlife!

It was very well organised, we met our guide Gilles as planned on time and with no delays we started the hike. It was very much as advertised, a nice hike with some great views and interesting wildlife. A nice dip in a beautiful pool topped it off. Gilles was very knowledgeable and helpful and gave us lots of insight into the flora and fauna of the area.

Black river gorge and Le Morne hike

We had a great time hiking in the black river gorge and Le Morne. Our tour guides Jeremie and Regine were positive, friendly and knowledgeable. Would definitely recommend these hikes to all travellers.
