Hornstrandir is one of the most remote and uninhabited regions of Iceland, with no permanent residents since the 1950s. Since 1974 the flora and fauna has been protected and now arctic foxes, birds, seals and plants have thrived undisturbed. During the summer, the extended daylight hours provide opportunities for long hikes and exploration under the midnight sun, offering an unforgettable experience of Iceland’s northern latitude. The area has a history of human settlement dating back centuries, with remains of old farms and fishing villages that tell stories of a challenging life in an unforgiving environment. Abandoned buildings add to its mystique.

Itinerary

The boat leaves Ísafjörður in the morning for the abandoned village of Hesteyri. On this hike the guide leads you through the singular history of the area and the unspoiled nature. Continuing on foot between the creeks and bays to another abandoned settlement at Sæból in Aðalvík. This is a hike for people in a moderate or good shape. Hiking distance is about 12 km on rough ground and elevation is of about 300 meters. There are no snack stands along the way, so mack sure to pack your lunch. Please remember to leave no trace—bring back all your trash to help us preserve the pristine beauty of this nature reserve for future visitors and wildlife alike In Aðalvík, the boat awaits you and sails with you back to Ísafjörður.
