Kelwin organized a wonderful tour for my only free day in Iquitos. I knew that I wanted to do one of his tours, but wasn't sure which. I reached out via email and he was quick to respond and gave me his WhatsApp, which we used to communicate trip details and logistics.
He arrived at my hotel when he said he would and brought walked me to the water where a boat waited to take me down the river. About an hour or so into the tour we stopped at Fundo Pedrito at little tourist attraction where we saw/fed some native bird and fish species.
We then got back in the boat and headed to the REAL Monkey Island. I guess there is a fake one that other tour companies bring customers to. It was a long trip, but so peaceful and also meditative just cruising slowly down the river.
La Isla de los Monos was an amazing spot. I toured the facility with Ben, a volunteer who had been working with the Island for over 8 years. He enthusiastically introduced me to all of the juvenile baby monkeys as the ran around on the ground and swung from the tree. One young Capuchin monkey stepped onto my head to practice her grooming. Ben continued to walk me out into the jungle where they released Monkeys as they start to reach maturity. We even got to pick some ripe star fruit and I ate a little bit on my way out with several little youngsters following waiting for me to share.
The ride back to Iquitos was quiet. I appreciated the Kelwin was there, but also allowed space for me to have my own experience without feeling like he needed to fill ever moment with a lot of information. He just allowed me to be present to the moment.
Just before getting back into the tributary that leads to Cusco City we were lucky to witness of pod of grey river dolphins playing around, which was such a wonderful surprise encounter.
You could do these things alone (hire a boat, but a ticket to Monkey Island, etc.) but I really appreciate that I just got on the boat and didn't have to think again and could just enjoy the time. I'd definitely recommend.
