    You can visit the Gassho Museum attached to the Shirakawa-go Roadside Station. Please take a look at the Gassho-style structure before going to Shirakawa-go. There are also many souvenirs for sale. Please note that the museum is closed from December 29th to January 1st, so you will have to stop by another place.

After extensively researching how I would go from Kanazawa to these villages on my own, I decided on this bus tour to save my sanity. I highly recommend doing this tour. It was well organized and our guide spoke excellent English. He gave us an overview during the ride to each town and tips on what to see. Beautiful scenery in Shirakawa-go! The group lunch in Shirakawa-go is a great idea as we needed to hit the road to make Takayama in time to give us time to explore. While in Takayama, be sure to try the Hida beef from some of the food stalls; the beef could be grilled on skewers, lightly seared for nigiri sushi, in steamed buns, etc — the beef is melt-in-your-mouth tender!

An interesting visit to Shirakawa-go

We liked that the guide provided us with background information during the bus journey but left to explore the destinations on our own. The only problem we had was that the Viator booking information didn’t provide the name of the tour company. There were 2 similar tours leaving at the same time. The only way to identify the correct tour was for the guide to search their lists of names.
