A family friendly few hours

Published on Sep, 2024

A great way to spend half a day with a young family. It cost 18 euros per adult and young children under 3 are free. We took our 18 month old to visit the zoo because we were staying nearby and had spent the previous day driving, so wanted to give her a chance to run around and have fun. We didn’t know what to expect from the zoo but it was a great few hours. Our daughter could safely run around and there were loads of things to keep her entertained. She particularly liked the parrots flying over head and the area where she could pat a very tame and patient Pygmy goat. There is a playing area although it seemed suited for older children (aged 6+). And there is an open air cafe that sold a mixture of food, drink and ice creams. Food was things like pizza, hotdogs, fish & chips. We had brought our own lunch and had a picnic on one of the many available benches so I cannot say the price of things, although I did not think it looked too unreadable (what you expect at a tourist attraction). We navigated the site with a pushchair and pretty much had no problems (one flight of stairs near the jaguars and one bird area where we had to leave the chair outside). But it really wasn’t a problem because our daughter wanted to run around anyway. Decent weather is needed to enjoy the zoo because it is mostly outdoors (fortunately we had a nice day). My only one slight moan was the carpark was so faraway from the entrance to the zoo. It was a good 5 minute walk. A good size carpark, and it was a pleasant walk with animals to see on route.

A magical experience

We chose the 'jaguar lodge' formula for our trip to Parrot World and would say it was definitely worth it! The room we stayed in was beautiful, with lots of exotic wood and the kids' beds were upstairs, as if they were sleeping in a treehouse. The huge window gave us a great view of the jaguars' enclosure and only about half an hour after checking in, one of the jaguars suddenly appeared on the balcony and lay down only inches away! It was really impressive to see such a beautiful big cat so close to us and he stuck around long enough for us to get some great photos. Our formula also included a delicious three course meal and breakfast in a beautiful restaurant about 5 mins' walk away (with options for gluten-free and vegetarian even vegan diners). We were honoured to meet the owner of the zoo there, who invited us on a private visit the next morning (not sure I'm allowed to say what we saw, but it was magical!!) We also got to join an hour long activity with the other lodge guests which involved feeding some of the animals alongside Juliette, who was really nice and full of energy and explained everything really well. We also felt the rest of the zoo was worth visting : the aviary with all the parrots flying around and squawking was really lovely, and we were big fans of the giant otters. There are talks about the different animals regularly which really help get the best out of your visit and plenty of picnic tables if you bring your own lunch. For us, this was quite an unforgettable experience, which we would definitely recommand !
