Suitable for elderly, young and for those with weak legs. But need to beware of waiting time for normal tickets can go up to four hours!
My recommendation would be to go early, get the express tickets for those who only have Penang Hill on their itinerary. If there are other places to go, I would recommend get the normal tickets and go around sightseeing till it is time to board (Tat’s cascade stream is nearby, there are also cafes nearby).
Now things to know about the funicular ride:
1. Normal ticket: sells by slot of two hours based on crowd, for example, if your ticket is 1.30pm-3.30pm, you may enter the metal gates area any time after 1.30pm. Inside the metal gate waiting area, is another half an hour to one and a half hour of waiting for the tram. (For elderly, would recommend to bring a foldable chair as there are no places to sit inside the waiting area)
2. Express tickets (almost triple the normal ticket price): skip the queue beyond the metal gates, so could save another half an hour to one and a half hour of waiting time. Waiting for the tram could take only 5-10mins at most. Also sell by time slots.
3. The normal & express tickets share the same tram (which means that express tickets do not have a privilege view) & it does get a bit crammed in the tram. For elderly and young children, would recommend to stand close or lean against the support bars in the tram.
4. The ride up takes about 6-8mins up to the Penang hill and view is absolutely cool. Imagine all that time save up walking! And could get to see parts of Penang as the tram travels higher up the hill.
Tips:
For those who have time: come early, get the normal tickets for 4pm or 6pm onwards slots, go to nearby cafes or take a grab & visit tat’s cascade stream, 金刚山地藏菩萨庙 & Gua Kelawar Buddhist Temple (walking downhill order). Once on the hill, could catch the sunset view while exploring. (Could see reviews on these places)
Bring a foldable chair for those who cannot stand long, there are literally tons of people sitting around waiting for their slots.
