In Salinas de Janubio you can enjoy a 90-minute guided tour and discover the process of making sea salt from the cookers to the extraction in an artisanal and manual way, as it was made in the past. It is the only salt mine in Lanzarote and the Canary Islands with more than 127 years of uninterrupted activity, passing from generation to generation. A unique visit on foot, where you will enjoy its family history, the hydraulic layout, its mills for extracting water, its architecture and its landscape, ethnographic and environmental values. It is a very salty excursion through the largest salt flats in the Canary Islands, visitors will enjoy a unique landscape, being a symbiosis between man, the sea and the volcanoes of Lanzarote.

Martin was an amazing, informative and a kind tour guide. The tour was really interesting, the views amazing. Would recommend doing the tour since it is the only way to see the sailins!

Little gem off the beaten track

Rocked up on the off-chance after visiting El Golfo and booked the private tour last minute - so glad we did this and not just the whistle-stop coach tour. We were part of a small group of 6. Our guide was fantastic, very engaging, he talked us through the history of the place and how the salt is collected and processed answering any questions as we went along. It’s a fair walk but almost entirely on the flat. There’s a good view of the site from the platform at the top of the windmill. I struggled a bit with the stairs being a creaky old bird but there’s not that many and it was do-able. Unfortunately we had to decline the glass of wine but we enjoyed the tasting session and were each kindly presented with a boxed sample at the end of the tour. A really interesting afternoon. Lovely team. Well worth the money.

Great hidden gem

What a hidden gem. To understand the 129 year history and get to see how the salinas still operates pretty much as it was designed to do was an unexpected pleasure. Martin the tour guide is fantastic, multilingual and obviously loves his job. Add in the cheese, wine and salt tasting well, what's not to love?! Recommended.

Good couple of hours with friendly tour guide in the only production salt flats in Lanzarote

The tours run each day and we chose the 16:00 one. Our group consisted of me and my wife and 5 other people who were French. The tour guide described the history of the salt production at that site and also throughout Lanzarote. We were able to walk around the pens and canals and inside a renovated (but non-functional) windmill pump. This is one of seven originals, and there are two that have been renovated. The tasting session was inside, in the shade and consisted of wine or fresh water, tomatoes and various flavoured salts. Interesting tour, friendly tour guide (Jus) and the fellow guests were chatty as we practiced our French and they practiced their English spoken language. Very enjoyable few hours out with a gift at the end. We can recommend.

Unique experience

We visited on a Saturday afternoon in early June and surprisingly were the only ones on the tour so we got a very personal and relaxed tour. Most other visitors just went to the shop / bar and admired the views instead. Our guide was very friendly and provided an overview of the history of the site and production of salt and we were able to taste different varieties of their salt with cheese and tomatoes at the end, which was delicious. You are naturally exposed to the sun and the paths are a bit uneven but it is accessible to most and is certainly worthwhile if you want to gain a unique experience and insight. For those not interested in the tour, it is worth visiting just for the views and there is a lovely black sand beach (with a large free car park) a couple of minutes drive further down the road which is worth a visit too.
