Overview

Enjoy a two hour cruise traversing the deep waters of Milford Sound, located in Fiordland. Your cruise will take you past St Anne’s lighthouse and out into the Tasman Sea. Informative guides point out scenic highlights along the way, such as the Bowen Falls (dropping 160 metres seaward), Sinbad Gully (a classic example of a hanging valley), snow-capped Mount Pembroke, and the awe-inspiring Mitre Peak itself, towering 1692 metres from the ocean floor.

    With more rainfall than any other part of New Zealand, Fiordland National Park and Milford Sound provide spectacular scenery whatever the weather conditions. Milford Sound is located at the northern most end of Fiordland National Park on the South Island of New Zealand.

    Having a smaller launch (approximately 20 metres) allows your cruise to navigate closer to the shoreline, getting up close to the incredible surroundings. Purpose-built for Milford waters, your boat has great viewing platforms should you encounter the local fur seal colonies – once nearly hunted to extinction, the rare Fiordland crested penguins or pods of dusky dolphins.

Great day out

We chose the 4pm cruise as it suggested that it would be quieter. The bigger boats had finished by then and there weren't any cruise ships on the sound. I liked the smaller boat that mitre cruise use and the narration throughout was very good. Complimentary tea and coffee was available. We saw seals and dolphins and several waterfalls. It was a sunny afternoon so you could see the tops of the cliffs but apparently the morning had been cloudy. We drove in so we could stop when we wanted rather than get a coach transfer. We also managed to find a parking space at Deep water basin and parked for free. It's a 30 minute walk to the terminal. Parking at the terminal is $10 an hour. Driving through the tunnel is fun. Great day out.

Brilliant day with amazing waterfalls, dolphins and seals!

The experience was amazing! It had rained the night before and there were hundreds of temporary waterfalls in addition to the permanent waterfalls. Mitre Peak Cruises has the smallest boats of the companies operating out of Milford Sound, which provides a personal feel to the cruise. When the crew sees dolphins, they can quickly turn the boat around.

This is my second time cruise on Milford sound. The first one was on a big ship. This time, I enjoyed the experience of splashing water and boat turning 360 degrees. The viewing of water falls, animals, and dolphins were as close to us as it could be. The commentry was live and informative . I highly recommend a smaller boat cruise to enjoy Milfordsound

Comfy boat, tea coffee were great, Fun commentary AND of course STUNNING - it drizzled then cleared up and then 2 dolphins played with us as we cruised!!! Seemed like you could walk to the building and 5 diff tour operators were there and you could get on a boat within a few hours if you didn’t pre-book
