This was easily the best excursion I did on my Norway vacation. Our small group (that's the first great thing about the trip was the group size, only 8 of us) went to some out of the way place near a frozen lake. It was remote, quiet, and best of all, DARK (the second great thing). We walked to the lake edge, and spent about 4 hours there (great thing number 3). The Northern Lights came out in all their glory and stayed out the entire time we were there (okay, I can't give Northern Soul credit for that, since they have no control over the aurora, but they got us in a perfect spot for viewing them). Our guides, Fede and Manuel (I think), were absolutely wonderful (great thing number 4). They helped us with our photos, took photos of us with their own equipment, and generally looked after us. After a couple of hours of oohing and aahing at the lights, the guides set up a Solo stove, where besides warming up, we ate soup, cookies, and later, roasted marshmallows (great thing number 5).
We all had so much fun, most of us were downright giddy on the drive back (although Fede and Manuel did practically have to drag us away).
Two nights later I did a different Northern Lights chase (different company). This one went out in a larger van - about 18 people. We drove along the side of a highway, and occasionally stopped on roadside parking areas to look for the lights. We had to put on reflector vests, which in and of themselves removed some of the dark. Then every few minutes a car would drive by in either direction, which would mess up our night vision. There was also some ambient light scattered around the horizon and elsewhere. And the Lights didn't make an appearance because of the weather, but I don't hold that against them, as they have no control over that. All in all, it was a major letdown from the Northern Soul experience (although the chocolate cake was delicious). And no campfire, although the description said there would be one. I don't know how, in a parking lot.
Days later on a snowmobile excursion, we saw the lights and my guide asked if I had seen them before that on my trip. I described both Lights Chasing excursions to him, and said how wonderful the Northern Soul one was, and how disappointing the other was. He then said that most Lights chasing excursions are like the second one I took. So I am eternally grateful that I got to go on the Northern Soul excursion.
I have no idea what the comparative cost is between Northern Soul and the others (my travel agent booked the excursions; I only know the price for Northern Soul), but it doesn't matter. It was worth every penny (or krone). I mean, you're spending all that money for the trip in the first place, it would be silly to cut corners on the major attraction. And I repeat, I can't say enough about our wonderful guides. I would ask for them again if I went again, but I am sure all their guides are wonderful.
In summary, my recommendation is, don't ever take a Northern Lights Chase tour unless it is with Northern Soul. You won't regret it.
Disclaimer again - these photos were taken by our guide, Fede, but each of us got them as part of our package.
