Itinerary

  • Musee Du Vin Et Du Negoce

In the building of the royal broker Louis XV, discover three centuries of history and prestige of the ‘grands vins de Bordeaux’. The vaulted cellars built in 1720 depict the work of the coopers and the traditional wine aging practices of traders in the nineteenth century. The cellars also illustrate the Bordeaux wine trade with a number of collections that take you beyond the two seas. The spirit of Chartrons and the Bordeaux wine trade are captured with the sophisticated architectural style of the 18th century. Various artifacts and archival documents trace the exceptional careers of the great merchant families as well as the ancestral knowledge of workers in the cellars. The wine tasting: At the end of your visit, you can partake in a wine tasting of two wines in the boutique of the museum. Here, you will learn how to differentiate between the grape varieties Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, as well as learn the difference between a Merchant and Chateau wine.

You can’t judge a book by its’ cover!

We moved to Bordeaux 4 months ago and live 200 meters from this museum. We’ve walked by it dozens of times and thought the entrance was so unappealing that it wouldn’t be worth going in. We were wrong! This museum is a simple, straightforward and realistic representation of the history of Bordeaux and how intertwined wine is with the history of the city. We spent about an hour walking through the museum part of the experience, and about an hour for the wine tasting. I lived in San Francisco for 5 years and spent half my weekends in Napa Valley and Sonoma. I’ve seen my fair share of wineries and done too many wine tastings. This place is really different. Every step of the museum is well documented and contains an extraordinary amount of detail and artifacts that bring the history to life. The wine tasting wasn’t hurried at all. The young man that conducted our tasting (Edward) did an outstanding job of explaining the various differences of the wine producing regions around Bordeaux, and took as many questions as we offered. We are learning French, but he was perfectly capable of doing the tasting in English. We would definitely recommend this museum!
