We initially struggled to decide where to go for shark cage diving, believing that Great White Shark sightings were far more common in Gansbaai than in False Bay. However, False Bay, located in Simon’s Town, was much more convenient for us, being just a 50-minute drive from Cape Town compared to the 2.5-hour journey to Gansbaai.
Historically, Gansbaai was known as the “Great White Shark Capital,” with frequent sightings until 2017. Since then, environmental changes and orca predation have caused sightings to plummet. By 2024, encounters in Gansbaai had become rare, with months passing without any sightings. Similarly, False Bay last had a reliable Great White season before 2018, and sightings there are now infrequent. Both locations now primarily feature bronze whaler sharks and other species.
We chose African Eco Shark Adventures in False Bay and had an incredible experience. At one point, the crew counted 12–14 bronze whaler sharks circling our cage, some over 3 meters long. The smaller group sizes made a huge difference—our boat had just seven people, with a maximum capacity of 12, creating a far more intimate and relaxed atmosphere compared to Gansbaai’s larger operations, which can take 40 or more people. Each diver had over 20 minutes in the cage, with no more than five people in at a time, providing longer water time and better visibility than many other operators. The use of scuba gear via a hookah system was another standout feature, making diving much easier for beginners compared to breath-holding alternatives. This unique setup proved to be a major advantage, something we only fully appreciated when reflecting on how different the experience would have been without it. Additionally, African Eco Sharks’ ethical and eco-conscious practices ensured responsible shark interactions, contrasting with some less scrupulous operators we had read about.
The crew’s professionalism, humor, and focus on safety further enhanced our trip, making it both educational and thrilling. The closer location to Cape Town, small group sizes, extended dive times, and beginner-friendly scuba option made this an unforgettable and well-rounded experience.
