Overview

This is the perfect tour for you if you love off-the-beaten-path destinations, breathtaking sceneries and being surrounded by nature. Learn about the origin of two of the most consumed drinks in the world: coffee and chocolate. During this tour you get to visit two different non-touristy farms, one of cacao and one of coffee, only 1 hour away from Medellin and close to each other so you spend most of the time enjoying and learning about the artisanal process of both products. Taking this tour you learn and participate in all the steps from planting the seeds to packaging. Then you have the chance to customize your chocolate and buying premium quality coffee and chocolate products. To complement this experience we provide a delicious traditional lunch (included) served in the farm that you eat as you contemplate the stunning views. But definetly the best of this tour is interacting with the warmest farmers in their houses. Book this amazing tour, you will never regret!

Itinerary

The day starts at your doorstep when we pick you up. Then we start our journey to north of Medellin, just 1 hour away through beautiful sceneries. Once we arrive we are welcomed by Oscar the cacao farmer and he will walk us through the plantation to see the cacao plants in their natural form as well as other natural local products like tangerine trees, coffee plants, plantain trees and more. Then we plant cacao seeds to show you the timeline and after that we start picking cacao fruits from the trees. Once we've picked enough we head back to the farm for the next step: fermenting. To ferment the cacao, we need to cut the fruit and extract the seeds. You also get a chance to try the raw chocolate fruit which is deliciously sweet. Once we’ve opened the fruit, we pour the seeds into wooden containers. After fermenting, the cacao then needs to be dried. To dry the fermented cacao, we use a green house called Marquesina for around 2 days (depending on the weather).

After drying, the cacao is then ready to be roasted. On our farm, we roast the chocolate in a very artisanal way, using a simple pot on a wood fire, that, after stirring it for about 30 minutes, gives it an amazing subtle woody flavor. After roasting the cacao beans, we remove the husk and manually separate them. Once the beans are husk-free they are ready to be ground and melted. At this point, we can add in some natural seeds to give the chocolate different premium flavors. Natural flavors we might add include: orange dried-skin, sugar cane, coffee, quinoa and ginger. Have an idea for a new chocolate flavor? We're always experimenting with new combinations, so let us know and we'll test it out. As a result of the friction from the artisanal grinder, the cacao beans melt, leaving us with our final product: a fresh delicious premium chocolate mixed with your favourite ingredient grown organically in the farm. You can buy these products for a very fair price at the farm.

The coffee tour takes place in a beautiful family farm that produces around 1 ton of coffee a year. We will have a traditional delicious lunch to have energy to start learning everything about the coffee production. The coffee expert will give you a thorough explanation about the coffee industry to have more context. Then we start planting a coffee seed and trying the bean as a fruit, you'll be surprised of how sweet they actually are. Later on, we begin to pick some coffee in the plantation and to enjoy the breathtaking views. Once the picking is done we need to process it step by step until its roasted and ground. We will also have as many cups as you want as we explain where in the mouth you should put the coffee to taste it in a more professional way. In conclusion, this Chocolate & Coffee experience is an unforgettable one, full of new friends, delicious organic products and the best memories of your trip in Colombia.

Best non-touristy excursion I did in Colombia!! Do it!

Published on Mar, 2025

My friend and I booked this private tour and immediately I knew it would be a great experience the moment Sara picked us up from our hotel! She is such a sweet, smart, knowledgeable guide, and we learned so much about the country on our drive to the coffee and chocolate farms outside of the city in the mountains. The 2 farms were so amazing with beautiful views of the mountainside and valley, and SO many stunning flowers and plants. The experience at both of the local farm owners was unique, leaning and doing the process that they do daily to produce the coffee and chocolates. Both farms had the sweetest local owners who treated us like family and we were welcomed into their homes. The lunch was absolutely delicious as well! Sara was the absolute best guide for this tour, as she is so interested in agriculture and knowledgeable about everything in nature in Colombia, full of energy, and is a total sweetheart as well. The coffee was delicious and the chocolate experience was so fun as well, as you get to make your own flavored chocolate bars! There is an opportunity to buy the coffee and chocolate made at that very farm. These farms are very small and not mass produced, so it felt really special to be able to help out the true local hard working Colombians, and everything they get from hosting these tours goes towards making their farms more functional and special for the guests. 10/10 experience, just do it!

The best tour in Medellín!

Published on Feb, 2025

This tour was amazing and I highly recommend anyone to book it! If you are looking for something that is less touristy this is definitely what you want! Our tour guide Sara was incredible and made the whole day memorable. We were able to spend the day learning all about coffee from a local farmer (Jose), taste test the freshest coffee and purchase bags to take home. Then we had a delicious lunch prepared by the lovely owners of the cacao farm, Sandra and Elisia. Afterwards we hiked through the cacao farm to learn all about the different types of cacao trees and then worked through the whole process of making our own chocolate from scratch! And we were able to purchase fresh chocolate on the way out. Everyone was very welcoming and hospitable, and the beauty of their farms was truly spectacular! This was 1 of our top experiences while in Medellín! Thank you Sara, Elisia, Sandra and Jose for an amazing experience!

Unforgettable experience with an expert tour guide!

Published on Feb, 2025

My wife and I had an unforgettable experience on the coffee and chocolate tour. Our tour guide, Sara, was excellent — incredibly knowledgeable, super fun and energetic, and extremely hospitable. We tried raw coffee beans and cocoa seeds, saw the process of roasting and preparing each, and were able to enjoy what we made and bring some home. During the process, we met the amazing family who runs the farm and enjoyed a wonderful homemade lunch at their home. These experiences are not available at home or anywhere close — it was truly special and unique to get this kind of view into the production of two commonly consumed goods, as well as a look at life for the amazing people who produce/grow them. A major highlight was learning what kind of diseases the plants undergo in the wild, and then what is done with the diseased fruits — something not commonly discussed in museums or even commercial production plants. Kudos to Sara for sharing the insider intel! An 8-hour day tour sounded daunting at first, but by the end we were sad it was over. Thank you!!

AMAZING TOUR AND SARA IS THE BEST

Published on Feb, 2025

We had an amazing time on our private coffee and chocolate tour in Medellin! Everything was seamless from pick up to drop off. Sara was one of the best tour guides we have had. She was personable, knowledgeable, honest, and very helpful. We don’t usually do tours often since we prefer to explore on our own but Sara made such a great impression that I would highly recommend her and this tour to anyone that visits Medellin!
