It's a bimillennial comercial city with strategic position serving the world's center - Rome, back in I BC. Known as Bracara Augusta in honor of the Roman Emperor Augustus, keeps its importance and legacy very present on remains and structure of the city center and surroundings. GuimarĂ£es, by it's turn, is the cradle of nationality. It was the battleground of our independence from the kingdom of LeĂ³n, and the birthplace of Afonso Henriques (our first king). It is an enchanted city that maintains the original medieval structure and architectural features that earned the distinction as a cultural world heritage site by UNESCO (2001).

It was a pleasure spending the day with our guide, Ricardo! He was very friendly and knowledgeable about the culture and history of Braga and Guimares. We had interesting conversation all day, but especially when he showed us to a local restaurant and the three of us had a delicious meal of specialties from the area. We were also grateful that Ricardo was willing to pick us up at one hotel and drop us off at another at the end of the day. Thanks Ricardo!
