Overview

Located only 25 miles from New York’s mid-town Manhattan in one of the most charming Hudson River villages in the metropolitan area, the Edward Hopper House Museum & Study Center is the historic family home where America’s most renowned artist was born and spent the first 26 years of his life. It highlights early Hopper works and the opportunity for visitors to experience the surrounding environment that inspired him and his choices of light, color, and subject matter that imbues his later work. Truly a unique experience! The house (built in 1858, with an 1882 addition) is registered on the National Register of Historic Places and the museum is a member of the Historic Artists Homes & Studios, a prestigious alliance run by the National Trust of Historic Preservation. excellent museum focused on the life and work of Edward Hopper

Published on Feb, 2025

A terrific museum visit that helped me develop a much more thorough and nuanced appreciation of Hopper -- I say that as someone already pretty well-versed in 20th century art. Everything is well-curated and informative. My children were surprisingly well-behaved as well -- the museum does a great job of trying to engage younger visitors. While it's a small museum, it's very easy to linger for a good while. Standouts include the very accomplished artwork Hopper's mother did as an eight-year-old, Hopper's childhood sketch of a boy along the river on the back of his elementary school report card, and many ofd the early sketches that formed the basis of later famous paintings. Hopper's bedroom with the view of the Hudson and the distinctive light was very engaging. I only wish there was also a museum down the road in Joseph Cornell's boyhood home, also in Nyack, but not open to the public.

A Hopper Delight

Published on Nov, 2024

If Hopper is one of your favorites it is worth a visit to where he began his life as a young boy and remained a home for his sister. You may even learn a thing or two about him as I did and enjoy the variety of photos and artifacts from his life. The young woman who greeted me was so welcoming and will also give suggestions for places to see and eat in Nyack.

A Magical experience

Published on Oct, 2024

It was a magical experience! We were met by two wonderful ladies guides who represented the local non-governmental organization which runs the Hopper House Museum. One of them told us the story of the house and the Hopper family. We were impressed by the way the house has been renovated with attention to every detail and respect for the historical nature of the place. We watched a very interesting video material containing the artist's personal story and his achievements told by art critics. It was very touching to see Hoppers personal space, objects and his early sketches. We liked the fact that there is an art gallery in the house where works of contemporary artists is presented. The current exhibit shows paintings by an artist strongly inspired by the works of Edward Hopper. We liked them very much! The visit was an overall great experience. Thank you!

Memorable day in Nyack

Published on Oct, 2024

Edward Hopper House offers a unique and intimate experience. Enjoyed insightful video. Private tour and stories by passionate local visitor guide Eileen made it EXTRA SPECIAL. Eileen, thank you so much for generosity of your time. Walking tour gave me an opportunity to explore Hopper’s surroundings and gain better understanding of the context in which his — especially early — works were produced. An excellent way to spend a day in the suburbs of NYC. It’s a MUST for every enthusiast of Hopper’s work.

Art is also history!

The upstairs bedroom and "Art Room" are excellent. Also, the video film was helpful in rounding out our knowledge of Mr. Hopper's life, etc.
