Itinerary

Sunken city, Little Theatre of Epidaurus. Probably the best outing of our group, due to its unique combination of history, culture, gastronomy, folklore, fun and entertainment. Our incredible experience begins at Yialasi Beach, located a short stroll from the center of Epidaurus. We will paddle westward to the famous Sunken City, also known as Argolida’s Lost Atlantis, with a great view of the imposing Volcano of Methana. The city was built 500 AC. You can see the remains of it and in some places even the ancient breakwater is still preserved. Walls, foundations of buildings, amphorae of huge dimensions and paved sections are sunken, meters below sea level, and only few meters away from shore. Being only two meters in depth, makes it a unique location for underwater site-seeing, snorkeling and underwater pictures. Once we reach the seabed, we will give you masks to swim among the ancient ruins, take photos, observe the unique colorful fish and experience for yourselves the aura and unique healing energy of Epidaurus (Epidaurus: the place where the aura works). When we’ll manage to convince you to move on, our next destination is the Little Theatre of Epidaurus. The Little Theatre of Epidaurus is placed in an area called Nisi, near the port of Palea Epidaurus. It used to be the theatre of the ancient city-state and apart from drama performances, it also hosted religious and political celebrations. This theatre was discovered in the early 1970s, under a field of olive trees and its restoration process continues till today. Its construction started in the 4th century B.C. and was originally built to cover the needs of this small city-state, so its size was not big. It had 9 tiers and 18 rows of seats and could host about 2,000 spectators. Some seats have inscriptions which show that the theatre was dedicated to god Dionysus and was built in sections. This theatre was totally reformed in the Roman times: the orchestra became semi-circular and the seats were reordered. However, it is believed that the small theatre of Epidaurus was in function for only seven centuries since its construction, because the historian Pausanias, who visited the area in the middle of the 2nd century BC, didn't mention anything about it. After several excavations and much restoration work performed over the last decades, the Epidaurus Little Theatre hosts today the annual Greek Festival, celebrated in summer with music, dance and theatre performances. There are seats for 800 spectators and work is done to restore more of them. The performances are mostly held in modern or ancient Greek. At the end of our journey, we will continue through gastronomy, by visiting “Athina EcoFarm”. There, we will relax, rest and enjoy an amazing meal made of local organic products, all cultivated in the area according to the ancient way. Having learned about ancient Greek heritage in cooking, cultivating and harvesting, we will return to our starting point, after an unforgettable journey among history, taste and culture.

Great family fun experience!

Published on Oct, 2024

Great family fun experience with Yiannis. Very friendly and passionate guide. Great to explore the Sunken City, taste a delicious home-made meal on the beach and even got to swim with a sea turtle !

Wonderful day.

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed this activity, it exceeded our high expectations. The scenery was beautiful, the kayaking and snorkeling were fun, especially near the sunken Roman villa, and the lunch was terrific. But the real highlight was our guide, Yannis, who was a wonderful ambassador to the area, highlighting its history, geography and plant life, and always patiently answering our questions. One of our favorite parts was a walk he took us on to a nearby ancient theater, where we could better appreciate why this area was a healing sanctuary. The day was one of the highlights of our entire trip to Greece.

Great day on the water!

What a fantastic day!! We had fun kayaking on the beautiful water, learned lots about the area, enjoyed snorkeling to see the sunken city, sea turtles, and fish, and had a great homemade lunch on the beach. We'd do it again in a heartbeat!!

Fantasic experience with very relaxed and knowledgeable guides.

Great experience. Our two guides - Yannis and Yannis - were both very knowledgeable and friendly. Gave lots of good information on local history as well as mythology surrounding the local area. The kayaking was not difficult and is suitable for beginners - we had a bit of wind the day we did it and had no issues. The small theatre is cool, and the guides added a lot of colour to it by telling us about the owner who discovered it (and promptly had his property confiscated under Greek law) and its current uses. The sunken city was why we signed up, and it was definitely worth it. Very cool to see the fish swimming in and around the ruins, and to see things like the tiled floor, the remains of the huge amphoras, and the oven. We were provided with snorkels and masks to swim over it and had plenty of time to do it. The lunch on the beach afterwards of stuffed peppers and tomatoes was delicious and suitable for coeliacs. One thing to note is that we got caught in traffic in Athens so were 25-30 minutes late, and the guides were completely chilled about it. We had contacted them to warn them, and one took the main body of the group on ahead and when we got there the second guide took us to catch up. No pressure, no drama, no cancellation. Absolutely brilliant.

Awesome day out and under the sea at Ancient Epidaurus!

The best part of my trip! There's very little info about the Sunken City at Epidaurus online and I found out about it because I read a blog by a traveller who had explored it with Tribal Kayak. The two Ioannis cousins and George are absolute professionals so that two complete noobs at sea kayaking could have a grand time in the sun and water. I also enjoyed visiting the little theatre and its surroundings - so much history in the Ancient Epidaurus area. Wait till you try the Greek meal cooked by George's mother - you'll want to come back again, for sure!
