What an amazing level of service and knowledge from Koichi and Kyoko! We had an amazing time, from seeing their beautiful house, to benefitting from Koichi’s knowledge as he toured us around different locations in the area. This will stay in our memories as a highlight of our Japan trip.
We visited a tea field and Koichi answered our many questions, then he took us to pick some wild plants to be a prt of our lunch (since it was too early in the season to pick tea). He also took us to see the big ‘茶’ (tea) symbol on Mount Higashi, and we went up to the top of the mountain for a hazy view of Mount Fuji before aso stopping at a small tea stand to try some varieties.
The final stop was back at Koichi and Kyoko’s lovely home. The meal they made for us was OUTSTANDING - we will remember it for a long time. It incuded a number of local seasonal ingredients, prepared with skill and flavour. Koichi and Kyoko were very accommodating of my Mum’s reduced mobility, including arranging a table for her so that she didn’t have to sit on the tatami during the meal. They also worked with us to accommodate our timing requirements (we had to leave early).
I note that the tour was conducted in Japanese, I translated for my family, but that Koichi and Kyoko were great at contacting us in English beforehand.
Another thing to note is that their house is rural, from our cruise terminal in Omaezaki to took around 1 hour and a JPY 12,000 taxi each way. Of course you may be coming from somewhere more convenient. We felt that the taxis were WELL worth it to get this experience. Their guesthouse looked lovely - I wish we could have stayed overnight!
