SURPRISE: Currently in the middle of a perfectly orchestrated Surprise Birthday Vacay for my BF so of course I just had-to schedule in The 'Māori culture and Wine Tour experience in the Wānaka region, which was focused on delivering the past Māori history and the present modern day culture, plus tour of the family-owned and operated wineries. I knew this area is most famously known for Pinot Noir. Pinot Noir is apparently one of the most difficult grapes to grow though Sth Island, NZ is one of the best places in the world that has the ideal climate, soils and more.
HIGHLY RECOMMEND for everyone to book your Wanaka wine tour with our new best mate, Joe!
THE TOUR: The Māori welcome was brilliant, I felt truly connect with New Zealand and more educated.
I must say, after tasting so many wine varieties and their unique story I truly did feel more knowledgeable and pleasantly tipsy.
I learnt there are 138 Pinot Noir grapes in this Golden Triangle of vineyards with 40 percent of the local wineries being organic. These farmers of ‘Liquid Gold’ take such pride in their craft that 98 percent hand harvest to ensure the very best outcome.
There were two brilliant wineries we went to, first being the very humble down to earth family grape farm called Aitkens Folly. On point for Pinot Noir and surprisingly their 'Gordon' Chardonnay
YOU MUST TRY every version of the Maude wine selections, though in my opinion, from the lower Mohawk Hill vineyard the most outstanding was the white label Pinot Noir which was in fact a blend of all 3 of their Maude vineyards.
Out of all the wines tasted today my favourite was the one I’m kissing in this picture. I have found a new true love.
Joe was very professional, punctual, entertaining and soulfully connected to the environment and his culture
