We used Troll Expeditions and met our guide in Vik. There were 6 of us and another 5 or 6 people joined us. We loaded into a 4 wheel drive van and headed out on a 40 minute or so drive on a very bumpy gravel road to the glacier/ice cave. Once we arrived, we had a short hike and climb to get up to the cave. It was a warm sunny day and water was pouring off the glacier and entrance to the ice cave. Since the glacier also consists of volcanic ash, we were rained on with a combination of water and ash. Fortunately, we were dressed appropriately (recommend not wearing white). Once inside the cave, we moved fairly easily through the cave. It was very cool to experience but a much shorter journey than expected possibly because the area around the cave was melting so rapidly. After exiting the cave at the other end, we were basically in a valley of the glacier. Here, our guide let us explore a little on our own and then led us on an easy climb up the valley to the edge of the glacier for some great views. After a few minutes of pictures and glacier info, our guide led us back down and back through the cave. This was a great and truly unique experience that was one of the highlights of our trip.
