If you're looking to visit three castles in the Loire Valley in a short amount of time, this tour offers a quick and efficient way to see them. The first two castle visits lasted a little over an hour each, with the second lasting about two hours to accommodate a lunch break. The tour guide was extremely knowledgeable about the region and its history, providing in-depth commentary as we moved through each castle.
The pace of the tour was fast. The guide was in "rapid fire" mode, walking ahead of the group, and while I’m a fast walker, others might struggle to keep up. You needed to be either close enough to hear her commentary or listen to the audio guide as she moved swiftly from one point to the next. She was friendly but direct, and while this wasn’t a relaxed, leisurely tour, it suited my preference for a quicker pace.
The tour left on schedule at 7:00 a.m. from Bercy, with a two-hour bus ride. At Castle 1, we had just over an hour; then about an hour of driving to Castle 2 for a similar amount of time. The visit to Castle 3 was shorter—only about 30 minutes for the tour and 30 minutes in the garden, though I personally would have preferred more time in the castle and less in the garden. The guide seemed eager to wrap things up, perhaps because of the crowds, which made it feel a bit rushed at the end.
Overall, I was satisfied with the experience, particularly the guide’s expertise. The pre-purchased tickets for the castles were a bonus, and despite the fast pace, I’d consider doing the tour again. It’s worth noting that times for each segment are:
7:00 a.m. departure from Bercy
2-hour bus ride
Castle 1: 1+ hour
Castle 2: 1 hour tour and exploration
Castle 3: 30-minute tour + 30-minute garden walk
2.5-hour return to Paris, arriving around 7:15 p.m.
While the guide's speed may not be for everyone, if you're after a quick and informative tour of the Loire Valley castles, this one delivers.
