The tour starts at John's on 12th Street for a reason as this restaurant was a big player in the early days of the mob rule and it's where you get your to taste authentic bolognese which was delicisious.
Our guide was Denis - a quiet, unassuming guy on first impressions but his story is unique! Brought up in the area and working with his Grandfather alongside some of the big gangland players prior to his police career gives a truly personal perspective of both sides of the coin. His career in the police was ended by a life changing fall - but I'm not going to give any spoilers away (though Denis has so many tales to tell, I doubt if any are repeated!).
We all donned our receivers and headsets and set off with Denis pointing things out and talking about the families and the gangland protocol as we walk. Questions are encouraged and Denis is very honest, open and reflective in the answers that he gives - the time flew by and I could have listened to his stories (both on a personal and work level for hours more).
The tour ends with the best cannoli we have ever tasted bar none!
If you have a fascination for gangland crime, or just want an entertaining, alternative view of NY this is the tour for you!
