Overview

Palma is a city bursting with ancient history and modern culture. Take a self-guided audio walk with Sandra, a longtime resident, to find out what stories and anecdotes its streets have to tell. Starting in the majestic Parc de la Mar, you’ll trace the path of history from the ancient Talayotic culture through the Spanish Inquisition and the elegance of old Palma to end the walk in the vibrant Plaça de Cort. Along the way, you’ll explore the city’s churches, bars and gorgeous courtyards. The tour is ready whenever you are. It plays audio automatically at exactly the right time and place using your smart phone's GPS and the VoiceMap mobile app, which also works offline. Start the tour in the app, put your phone in your pocket, and let Sandra direct you through the streets. The total walking distance is 2km and takes about an hour without stopping, but you can pause anytime! There are lots of bars and restaurants along the way for a quick stop – or a long one!

    The audio tour starts at the Parc de la Mar, a charming square with a small salty lake, which faces the Cathedral and the Almudaina Palace. This square was built over the sea, in the ’60s, while Majorca witnessed a tourism boom.

  • Can Forteza Rey (Pass By)

    This splendorous monument, originally built in the early 1900's is one of the Art Nouveau jewels of Palma.

  • Bar Abaco (Pass By)

    This typical noble Majorcan house, formerly called “Can Marcel, was built in the seventeenth century. Now this historic building hosts a beautiful lounge bar with a rustic and authentic design. A perfect place to make a stop during the tour!

  • Santa Eulalia (Pass By)

    This church is one of the oldest churches of Majorca, built in the thirteenth century. Actually, the first kings of Majorca were crowned in Santa Eulalia Church before the Cathedral was completed in 1601. The interior is richly decorated in baroque style, and it’s free to visit.

  • Passeig des Born (Pass By)

    In the past, the torrent of Sa Riera flowed through this street, and divided the city in two parts. Knights’ tournaments were organised along this torrent.

  • Placa de Cort (Pass By)

    This charming central square is the Mile Zero of Palma. We’ll finish the audio tour at this place, which is steeped in history.

  • Placa Major (Pass By)

    This beautiful square was built at the middle of the nineteenth century. Every year, it hosts the feast day of Saint Sebastian, on the 19th of January. This is the celebration of the patron saint of Palma, one of the most important of Majorca.

  • Catedral de Mallorca (Pass By)

    The Cathedral of Palma, also called the Cathedral of Light, or the “Seu”, is the crown jewel of the city. The construction of this beautiful gothic monument started in 1230 and was completed 371 years later, in 1601. Nowadays, it is a tremendous source of pride to the Majorcans.

  • Palau de l'Almudaina (Pass By)

    This Arabic king Palace, built in the tenth century, is the oldest monument of Palma. Nowadays, it is the official King Residence, where the King Philip VI receives official visitors such as Presidents from other countries. This Palace is also a museum and a Military building.

  • Sa Llotja (Pass By)

    This beautiful Gothic style building built in 1428 used to be the former maritime stock exchange. It is one of the jewels of Palma, open to public, and the admission is free.

  • Palma de Mallorca (Pass By)

Excellent & Informative Guided Walk at a Time & Pace of My Choosing

I used the Voice Map audio guide on the Palma's Alternative History Tour. I found that this innovative App was an excellent way to do the tour at a time and pace that I wanted. The Voice Map guide gave me a very helpful and informative insight into Palma’s history. I highly recommend this App and its guided tours and I will definitely check out what guides are available in other cities that I visit.

We arrived in Palma with an open itinerary so looked online for activities and this caught our eye. Its great that you get to go at your own pace and can break off when you want to explore any of the areas more. We definitely saw things we would have missed if we hadn't done the self guided walk. After seeing the Palace we went back another day to do the tour. Will definitely look out for these again in other cities.

Excellent way to discover a town. The pace was great, the explanations helpful, I will look around for other cities as you can also do it from home. Totally worth it! This is my new way of exploring cities.

The experience was smooth and very interesting! From small fun facts of each place to more general history of the city. We will definitely do it again in other cities. The autonomy and privacy it allows is much better than to be in a group tour (and excellent value for money). 100% recommend.
