Highclere Castle

This is your opportunity to visit the real Downton Abbey, where the hit TV series and movies were filmed. Enjoy a leisurely visit to the magnificent Highclere Castle, home to the Earl and Countess of Carnarvon. Go behind the scenes and you will recognise many of the rooms used for filming the drama. During this unaccompanied visit of the Castle, you will also have time to see the highly acclaimed Egyptian Exhibition. Relive the moment when, in November 1922, Lord Carnarvon and Howard Carter discovered the tomb of Tutankhamun in the Valley of the Kings. Enjoy lunch in one of the Castle’s several tea rooms or café, and maybe sample one of their famous cocktails or even a glass of champagne. Later, explore the Castle’s delightful gardens, woodland walks and flower meadow. Take photos to your heart's content in this beautiful setting as you retrace the familiar steps of Lord Grantham and members of his family.

The day continues onto the beautiful and timeless Cotswolds village of Lacock, which dates back to the 13th century and where cars are the only sign of modern-day life. Little wonder it has been used as a backdrop to countless films and TV dramas including Downton Abbey, Harry Potter and several BBC productions such as Pride and Prejudice. The ancient Abbey in the heart of the village boasts a fascinating history and a charming museum that celebrates the invention of photography here in 1839 by William Henry Fox Talbot.

We visited Bath in August as part of a girls’ trip and wanted to see Highclere Castle since it is close by. Since no one in our group wanted to rent a car and navigate our way there, we chose Galahad Tours which was highly rated. This was the best decision ever! Matthias picked us up on time and drove us in his beautiful , pristine Mercedes van . He was charming and fun to talk to since he is very knowledgeable about the surrounding areas, current events in the UK and of course Downton Abbey! Right as we were arriving, Matthias turned on the theme music to Downton Abbey as the castle came into view! He then escorted us to the entrance, gave us our passes which he had purchased, and waited while we began our scheduled tour. He was ready and waiting at the exit as we finished the tour and gladly drove us to the Cotswold for a quick tour. We had an exceptional day thanks to Matthias! FIVE STARS!! I highly recommend Galahad Tours!!

Amazing personalized tour!

I booked this tour as part of my vacation in the UK and I don't think it could have gone any better. Matt was extremely knowledgeable of the castle and local villages. We had more than enough time at every location and were able to beat the larger buses and crowds. We learned so much about the history of the area, the local flora/fauna, and even some of the wildlife. The van was extremely comfortable and cool in between traveling to different locations. Once the tour was over, Matt even recommended a local pub that had an amazing Sunday roast. I recommend to anyone who loves smaller and more personalized tours!
