The Cochin Royal Heritage Trail was a particularly unique experience. Members of the royal family live and work in Kochi today. Their palaces are in this one area of town. While being larger than the typical home in the area, they're not grand structures. They're notable for their architecture and the history contained within. Unfortunately they are being gradually demolished to make way for modern buildings.
Our guide Rajith arranged for us to meet one family in their home. They served us home-made food and we talked about their role as royals in the modern day. They showed us family photos and talked about their history. The two small children in our group (ages 6 and 4), were tired and close to “melting down” by the time we got to the home. But they rebounded immediately in the hospitality and spent a lot of the time running around the courtyard area of their main structure. It was a very warm, welcoming and educational time.
