Explore the wonderful world of the Renaissance and visit Castle Ambras (Schloss Ambras) in Innsbruck. Situated in the hills above Innsbruck and visible from afar, the castle is one of the provincial city's most popular attractions. Be amazed by the impressive jousting armor suits in the Armory Cabinets (Rüstkammer), glance at the artifacts in the Chamber of Art and Curiosities and see the bathing facilities used by Philippine Welser, which will give you an idea of the 'spa culture' in the 16th century. Don't leave Innsbruck without seein this!

One of the coolest things you'll see in Tyrol. The exhibit ranges from methodical collection of knightly armor to an absolutely eclectic gathering of "all that's cool" circa 1600s. The collection is fifficult to describe. Think of if it this way: it's 17th century and you have to make a gift for a man that literally has everything; what would it be? You really want to know? (Go and find out.)

Ambras Castle is the most important and famous castle in Innsbruck. The best way to get there is by bus, which departs from Innsbruck Railway Station and has a stop named after the castle (by car you have to pay a ticket for the parking). The castle has a big collection of armours and swords as well as many curious objects and paintings the King used to entertain his guests with. Don't miss the exposition of glass handcrafts too! Fun fact: in the gardens there are peacocks.

The castle is very nice and the museum is extensive. There are many trails to walk in the forest; small waterfalls, etc. The only negative was that TripAdvisor told me after I had booked the excursion that I needed to print my ticket. This was not possible since tickets were purchased the night prior. They fussed about it at the gate, but did let us in.

Great tour for some history. You pay to get inside the castle; however, you could walk around the castle for free. There are 2 places to go inside. The first is by the souvenir shop and you walk around and see the medieval armor and weaponry used for the time and some other stuff. I was surprised to see samurai armor. If you ever watched Shogun on TV you’ll love the find. The 2nd entrance is the main castle which houses many portraits of the people there through the time. Interesting descriptions of their life as well. Careful with photos. Some places you can and some you can’t and they have people there to enforce it. Outside are beautiful grounds/gardens. Like I said before that part is free. We didn’t have a lot of time so we only went to the back bridge that is against the woods. Lots of walking trails and waterfalls. I’ll have to go back some other time to explore those. Great little tour to take if you’re in the area.

Not just a castle tour....quite a museum too!

Perfect way to start a tour of Innsbruck. This self guided tour is inexpensive and super informative. Collections from the very FIRST museum ever started in the world! We went on a weekday and had the entire castle and museum to ourselves. One word of caution is that when you leave the castle (which is above and overlooking the city) the city bus is really the only option and you must get a ticket to ride in the city (nowhere near the castle!). The bus driver was really nice and let us ride back to the city without a ticket. We repaid the local people with Karma in various ways for the wonderful treatment that they showed us tourists.
