This was our second visit, the first being some 15 years ago, and this was better. The sunset tour starts with a class of wine and some local treats which is a nice start but the animals are the stars. Our guide knew a lot about the animals and it is great to see that so much more is now known about the cause of the facial tumours and that a vaccination for this iconic species is close.
The tour introduces you to the devils as well as two species of quoll, another interesting animal.
It then takes you to places not usually visited finishing with a feeding at the back of the site, which was accompanied by the screeching that gave them their name as well as a range of other noises as the animal communicated with each other. Despite their name, the animals are quite shy, tend to keep to themselves but will share food with one another, provided they get some too! It was great to see some of their natural behaviours and get up close with a juvenile.
To get the most of your visit, we’d recommend the late-in-the-day tours when the animals are waking up and active. Really informative and worth the effort.
We would certainly visit again to spend time with these Tasmanian mascots.
