Overview

Tondaya is a traditional Kyoto machiya house, which was registered as National Cultural heritage in 1999 and also enlisted as Structure of Landscape Importance in Kyoto in 2007. We originally started Kimono wholesale business 140 years ago, but currently, we operate Nishijin Lifestyle Museum to promote the education of traditional Kyoto lifestyle culture here in Tondaya. You can have a great experience of Japanese traditional culture, such as Kimono dressings, tea ceremony, and Machiya tour in this precious space nourished in the history of Kyoto.

Itinerary

The tea ceremony is not just about drinking tea; it is also a means of spiritual enlightenment. In this plan, you will experience wearing a beautiful kimono and participating in a traditional Japanese tea ceremony. The plan is as follows Upon arrival, you will first put on a kimono. We will then take you to a machiya (townhouse) that has been used for 140 years, in kimono. Feel free to take pictures in the machiya. Estimated tour time The maximum experience time for the activity is set at 1.5 hour. Please note that the time may vary depending on how crowded the tour is. We had a wonderful time learning about the ceremony trying traditional clothes and experiencing this treat. It started off promptly and the ladies got us dressed in what felt like record time with lots of experience in helping us feel comfortable and taking by pictures. The ceramics used were all very nice as well and highlighted the experience.

Very informative from nice staff, authentic building, nice kimono etc. explained the tea ceremony very well. Only complaint was that it was difficult to find with poor signage.

We had an excellent experience during this tea ceremony. First the kimono, you have very nice ladies that help you wear it, then the visit of a typical Japanese house. The tea ceremony was quite fast but enough to understand it.

The tea ceremony and kimono experience were so unique and memorable. The first group of women helped get everyone in our group ready in kimono and set up, while our guide gave us the history and cultural significance of the tea making and serving process. We were guided around the 140+ year old tea house and told about the rooms, the furniture and items in each, and how the tea ceremony process came to be. It was a fantastic experience and I would highly recommend others to try this at this tea house.
