Overview

Combining two scenic flights this is a low fitness Tasman Glacier exploration for up to 2 hours ice time at approximately 1300 metres. Following your knowledgeable, professional, NZMGA trained Guide you will learn about and be in awe of New Zealand's big mountain country. This is Mother Nature at her finest and you will leave understanding why this area forms a part of the UNESCO Te Wāhipounamu - South West New Zealand World Heritage Area.

Meeting points

The turn off to Aoraki/Mt Cook is on SH8 by Lake Pukaki. Driving east this can be found 8kms from Twizel and driving west, 50kms from Lake Tekapo. Turn onto SH80, which leads you to the Mt Cook Village. 6kms from the Village, follow signs to the Mt Cook airport.

This activity ends back at the meeting point.

Itinerary

You will fly in to your drop off point on a remote part of the glacier. Once your crampons or snowshoes are fitted you’ll go exploring the amazing ice formations, following your guide as they cut steps in the glacier, using skills handed down from NZ’s mountain pioneers. Your trip finishes with another spectacular scenic flight back to our Aoraki/Mt. Cook base.

Fun glacier walk

Fun experience hiking on the glacier. Short, 10 minute, helicopter ride up to the landing site. We had two hours on the ice with a very knowledgeable guide. It was not strenuous at all and they took very good care of us. I would highly recommend this trip if you are looking for a glacier experience.

Top notch excursion

The best glacier excursion ever. Walked/crawled through glacier caves/wholes. Drank glacier water. Made slushie with glacier ice. Learned tons. Hunter was an awesome guide. The heli ride was amazing. On the way back we made a close fly by a glacier on a mountain’s face. Highly recommended.

This experience was everything promised in the description-- a 2-hour experience out on tasman glacier beneath majestic Mount Cook, even Including a descent ten feet down into a blue white hole with the water surging underneath. with the help of Jimmy, our expert guide. He was not only quite informative but also extremely generous and patient In helping each of us make the most of all the different kinds of experience out on the glacier.

Allow extra days in case weather prevents a flight

I’m giving this operation 5 stars because they obviously take safety first. We were scheduled to go on Thursday 21/11 and initially the weather looked like our flight would go off. The 9am had but we were booked on the 11am tour. We got weighed, our backpacks were weighed. Wrist bands, hiking boots, socks put on. Poles added to the bag. Then the flight was canceled as snow & wind came rushing in. We were gutted. We had missed out on another helicopter & hike on the Kepler trail due to Mother Nature as well. We are a Colorado family & know how quickly weather can turn in a hot minute in the mtns. We’ve had our own experience with friends hiking in our summer months. You can get sleet, snow dumping on them when it had been a sunny alpine day. We thank the team for your kindness & professionalism. We’ll be back to Mt Cook and allow more time. Because Fri was epic but we had to travel to Christchurch to stay on our schedule. We did our own nice hikes in the Tasman Glacier area. But a helicopter tour would have been the best!
