Overview

We begin with a complimentary French breakfast in the neighborhood Saint-Germain-des-Prés at the café Les Deux Magots, where influential writers such as James Baldwin and Richard Wright spent much of their time. We'll explore many historical sites in and around the 5th and 6th arrondissements as we make our way over to the neighborhood of Pigalle. There we'll discover why the neighborhood at one point earned the nickname "Black Montmartre". But no Black Paris tour would be complete without visiting the historical neighborhood, Chateau Rouge aka Little Africa, with its many shops and businesses. You’ll receive an Unlimited Metro Pass that we’ll utilize to get to locations not within walking distance. The tour will then conclude with an amazing meal together at one of the best African restaurants in the city where we can share our favorite things about the day (Meal Not Included In Price).

    Présence Africaine started as a pan-African quarterly cultural, political, and literary magazine, published in Paris and founded by Alioune Diop in 1947. In 1949 it expanded to a publishing house and bookstore. Influential in the Pan-Africanist movement, the decolonization struggle of former French colonies, and the birth of the Négritude movement, we will step inside and explore it's rich history.

    The famous French mausoleum which celebrates the lives of prominent French figures, was originally built to be a church. We'll take in the view from the outside while highlighting those of African descent that are buried and/or recognized here, as well as French abolitionists.

    We'll walk through the neighborhood that became the extension of the Harlem Renaissance in the 1920s and 30s. With a large amount of jazz clubs and black owned businesses started by African Americans living in the city, we'll take note on some of the most notable locations.

Tour Date - SATURDAY - November 30th, 2024 Knight provided us with a great tour and stories of notable Afro-Americans, Afro-Caribbean's and Africans who helped to contribute to the rich history of Paris. He is such a great storyteller and has so much passion for his work that you become captivated by the stories that he shares of each individual contributor. You can actually picture the conversations/interactions shared between James Baldwin and Richard Wright. Walking into some of the establishments that these contributors inhabited, made you feel a deeper connection with them, as you stand in the place where they once stood. Knight has great foresight and truly thinks through all your needs/wants when on a walking tour. TRY THE TOUR, I also recommend it as a gift for anyone visiting Paris. Even if you live in Paris as a local and are unaware of this rich history, it is a tour worth taking to give you context.
