Overview

The National Holocaust Museum tells the story of the Nazi persecution and murder of the Jews of the Netherlands. Before the Second World War, Jews and non-Jews lived side by side. They had the same rights. But during the war, the Nazis and their collaborators killed around six million Jews in Europe. That was the Holocaust or Shoah. This is the first and only museum to relate the history of the persecution of the Jews of the entire Netherlands. Including the day-to-day life of Jews on the eve of the Second World War, the liberation as Jews experienced it, and how the Holocaust has been treated in our national culture of remembrance: all this is examined in the museum.

Through this former teacher training school hundreds of Jewish children, who were held captive in the crèche next door, were smuggled to relatively safe places with the help of the resistance during the Second World War. At this historic site, in the National Holocaust Museum, the story of the Holocaust is told in changing exhibitions and events in an artistic form and based on personal accounts.

Hollandsche Schouwburg

During the Second World War, the occupying forces made Jews assemble in this former theatre. Tens of thousands of people were held here, not knowing what fate awaited them, until they were deported to concentration and extermination camps. The Hollandsche Schouwburg is now a memorial site with a wall of names commemorating the Jewish victims. It also holds an exhibition about the Holocaust in the Netherlands.

Definitely visit

Don't go on minimal time. Give yourself 2 hrs to listen and to read the documents. It is so well displayed and explained in a timely order. The staff are excellent and the ear pieces are a must- they translate in a lot of different languages.

The dedicated staff were outstanding

What struck me most here apart from the quality of the museum itself was the passion and dedication that was shown consistently by all the staff. They really care about the museum and went to great lengths to make it clear that their visitors really mattered. It felt like they all had buy-in to the project and their dedication was wonderful. This museum should be visited by as many people as possible to ensure that the horrors of the holocaust can never happen again.

Harrowing, but excellent

This is a small museum that covers the Holocaust from the Dutch perspective. It's well laid-out and is blunt in its description of what the Holocaust victims suffered and the extent of Dutch collaboration. While it mainly deals with Jewish victims, Romany and Sinti victims are also mentioned. In spite of visiting several Holocaust museums over the years, this visit was a very moving one. I was somewhat reluctant to visit due the horrific campaign being conducted by Israeli forces in Gaza (December 2024). I needn't have been concerned as this museum rightly focuses on the horrors of the Holocaust.

Visited this exhibition which is only a 15 min walk from the centre of Amsterdam. Tram 14 to Plantage (ARTIS). By far one of the best exhibitions I have ever visited. Lockers for bags and coats. Lifts for access and laid out on a few floors. Audio recommended. Staff very helpful and friendly. In fact I meet a lovely staff member (lady) outside of the museum. She told me all about the museum and the other places of interest to visit. Well laid out and informative. Some of the history of this building is very moving.

There were a lot of exhibits to view and a lot of information to absorb. I really enjoyed the mix of different media as part of the information that was shared. It was a stark reminder of the importance of remaining diligent as well as respectful of others.
