Overview

Embark on an unforgettable tour to the true tip of the African continent where the 2 oceans officially meet. Discover a small breeding colony of African penguins beforehand and also taste South Africa's award-winning cool climate wines in the Hemel n Arder wine region. Explore an untamed Moravian town from the 1820s called Elim and enjoy plenty photo opportunities as we traverse the extreme south coast of the country on this tour. Albeit being a long drive, The Cape Agulhas tour is much more an authentic experience with a less touristic feel for those in search for such a niche market. The use of a comfortable private vehicle is also guaranteed.

Itinerary

  • Betty's Bay

Betty's Bay is a coastal town an hour east of Cape Town. It was a whaling station in the late 1800s. Later it became better known for its unusual resident: the African penguin! The penguins settled at Stoney Point beach at the of the 20th century. This made Stoney point one of 2 mainland penguin colonies. Guests will have some time to walk along the penguin beach and see the penguins up close.

    40 minutes

  • Hamilton Russell Vineyards

It would be an injustice to drive through one of the best wine regions in the country and not stop. The Hemel n Aarde (wine region is both close to the sea and at a higher altitude than the Cape Winelands. This is the perfect climate for the cool-climate grape variety. This means wines that are subtle, crisp acidity, a lighter body, and bright fruit flavours. The valley is able to produce some of the best pinot noirs and Chardonnay wines in the country. Your wine tasting experience at Hamilton Russell will not disappoint.

    45 minutes

  • Hermanus

After the wine tasting experience, the tour will continue towards Hermanus. A quaint coastal town which is also South Africa's whale watching capital city. Whales can be spotted here from the whale trail along the shores between the months of June and November every year. Hermanus is also known to be one of of South Africa's gastronomy towns and you will be able to have lunch here before the tour continues South east towards Elim.

    1 hour 30 minutes

  • Elim

From Cape Agulhas, our journey will take us through a picturesque village called Elim. Elim was established in 1824 by German settlers. It was the 3rd Moravian station near Cape Town and very little has changed over the years. Rows of whitewashed, thatch-roofed cottages line the streets of this charming village. And all the fig tree-lined streets lead to the church! Guests will have time to walk around and visit the town's small rose garden.

    30 minutes

  • Cape Agulhas - Southernmost Tip of Africa

3 hours Southeast of Cape town City is the most Southern tip of the African continent: Cape Agulhas. It's here that the warm Indian Ocean collides with the icy Atlantic. The rugged coastline hosts over 21 000 wetland and seabirds of different types. The Serengeti of the seas, named because of its diverse marine life, is also a part of the Cape floral kingdom. The richest floral kingdom in the world! About 2000 different plant species are resident in this area and with over 100 being endemic. While we are here, you will have ample time to explore the coastal plains. You can also visit the Cape Agulhas lighthouse; the second oldest in South Africa. A walk up to the summit of the lighthouse provides one with a bird's eye view of the town and the museum at the bottom.

An amazing day full of such a variety of different types of adventure & experiences! A must do on a visit to Cape Town!

Published on Feb, 2025

What a wonderful, chilled and personal tour we had with Natasha, our driver and tour guide! Just the three of us and Natasha! We had many exciting stops on our way to Cape Agulhas and Natasha allowed us plenty of time to enjoy each place and adventure. These included the incredible, wild Penguin colony at Betty’s Bay, which also had lots of Cormorants and Rock Hyrax creatures running around; the beautiful little Dutch town of Elim, with lots of houses with thatched roofs and a beautiful church; the whale watching town of Hermanus, where we stopped for lunch; wine tasting at the super Hamilton Russell Vineyards. Cape Agulhas has a lighthouse, great wild and rugged coastline, where the Indian and Atlantic Oceans meet, a harbour & pier, where we saw a stingray swimming, up close. Along the route, we also saw a lot of Wildlife, including Baboons, Springboks, Osterichs, Cranes, hawks and Guinea Fowl, to name but a few! Natasha was an amazing guide, who made the whole day such a fantastic experience!

Best trip ever!

It is worth the long drive. The scenery is beautiful and the ride back is fantastic. Rodney is a great guide and he was extremely helpful and knowledgeable.

Kevin our guide was great and went to every effort to ensure we enjoyed our trip. The itinerary was varied and choice of vineyard and lunch locations was spot on. A great day out

A great day at the bottom of Africa

I’m a geography nerd so going to the southernmost point in Africa and seeing where the Indian and Atlantic Oceans meet was amazing. Our guide Kevin was friendly, personable and knowledgeable and we loved spending the day with him.

The sublime Cape Agulhas

Published on Sep, 2024

Our 11 hours tour for two persons from Cape Town to Cape Agulhas and back with Cape Archive Tours was, briefly expressed, perfect. The route to Cape Agulhas by the sea and back through country side gave a chance to admire the nature and the wild life in the fullest. As we wished to skip the wine tasting and the lighthouse in Cape Agulhas and visited the penguin colony only shortly we had a pleasant amount of time for a coffee break in a charming village of Elim, a lunch in Hermanus and experience the waves and the winds of two seas of the southernmost tip of African continent, sublime Cape Agulhas. Our driver and guide, Danson, is a professional. A trustworthy driver, a knowleadgable guide - also concerning variety of topics like economy, social issues or geology (!) in SA - and a nice person to spend a day with, though naturally we had our own time when convenient. Without such company as his a lenghty tour might be a less exhilarating experience. I wholeheartedly recommend the tour provided by Cape Archive Tours and smoothly orchestrated by Danson.
