Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden

A visit to the iconic Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden on the eastern slopes of Table Mountain offers exellent birding potential. From fynbos endemics like Orange-breasted Sunbirds and Cape Sugarbirds to forest birds such as Sombre Greenbuls and African Paradise Flycatchers. Olive Thrush, Cape Batis and Lemon Dove along with the resident Spotted eagle-owls are all regularly seen.

Rondevlei Nature Reserve

We visit Rondevlei, part of the False Bay Nature Reserve on the Cape Flats which affords excellent Wetland and Strandveld birding.

Strandfontein

The Sewage Works at Strandfontein offers some of the best birding around Cape Town and we'll drive around the site to tick off a number of interesting bird species including Greater Flamingos, Great White Pelicans, Back-winged Stilts and Cape Teal.

Boulders Beach Penguin Colony

We visit the main Boulders Beach Penguin Colony viewing decks within the Table Mountain National Park which a few thousand African Penguins call home. National Park gate fee: R190 per adult, R95 per child (under 12)

Silvermine Dam

Silvermine Dam is nestled high up in the fynbos-clad mountains in the central peninsula and can deliver interesting bird sightings in a gorgeous location. This stop is scheduled as the last site visit and as such will only be done if time allows. Entrance fee for adults: R160 pp Child: R80 under 12 years

A fantastic day of birding - highly recommend!

Despite the last-minute nature of my booking request, Mark was kindly able to take me out birding around Cape Town for the day back in October. It was a great day from start to finish - we hit a few different sites in Mark’s car and built up a great list of birds. Mark’s impressive local knowledge and experience also enabled us to find a few target species I likely wouldn’t have seen on my own. Mark was great in terms of allowing flexibility in the day to target the species I really wanted to see, as well as introducing me to others I wasn’t familiar with, and all the while teaching me more about the wider ecology of the Fynbos. As an ecologist myself, I really valued that extra insight. On top of that, I found Mark to be very easy company - endlessly polite and professional, and full of stories from his years living and working in the area. The day was one of the highlights of my trip to SA, and I would absolutely recommend Mark and his company to any visiting birders. Cheers!

Mark was very kind and extremely knowledgeable about all of the wildlife in the Cape. We went to 4 different locations and spotted many unique birds. I appreciate how thoughtful he was in using his expertise as a guide and providing history of the area as we were birding. He even adjusted our plan based on weather and it worked out perfectly where we had clear views in every location we went to. Truly enjoyed the long day and learned more about the bird and plant life in Cape Town in one day than I would have otherwise!

Mark is really knowledgeable about the birds and plants. Despite the bad weather, Mark did what he could and made the best of the day (They did warn me about the bad weather and it won’t be ideal for birding, but it was my only day left in Cape Town.). Definitely one of my best solo tour I’ve had, and would engage their service again if I’m here again.

Great for Solo Travelers and Those with Different Physical Abilities

Absolutely amazing tour. It is rare to find a company that will take a solo traveler on a private birding tour. I have had many a tour cancel on me or demand I pay 2x the price in order to experience the wildlife! Mark did NOTHING like this. He was extremely knowledgable, pointed out both flora and fauna, and tailored the experience to what I wanted to see. We spotted over 45 species - and luckily spotted a pied kingfisher. I also brought my mom along, who is not a big birder, and she was engaged the entire time. Mark accommodated her mobility issues and suggested treks that might be better for her. Because it was a private tour she was able to stay in the car or casually walk the botanical gardens while Mark and I sought out birds. I would 1000% recommend this tour to anyone who loves wildlife and would take it again myself.
