Overview

The Cascades Female Factory is a World Heritage-listed historic site situated in the country of the Muwinina people in lutruwita / Tasmania. This site reflects on the story of the displacement, mistreatment and forced migration of convict women and girls, and their contribution to the history of Australia from colonisation to the present day. Interwoven are the First Nation’s stories of Palawa, a culture that is over 40,000 years old and which was so gravely impacted by British colonisation.

What a great experience. We did the Convict Women’s Tour with John. It was fascinating. The stories are hard to hear but history isn’t always comfortable. There is only one original building left, however what is left still speaks for those who didn’t have voices in life. A very worthwhile experience and highly recommended.

Both tours were very well structured and delivered! The most exciting part was the humanistic and emotional aspect of the narrative complementing the whole experience left wanting more! Both tourist guides were tremendously knowledgeable and eager to fulfill our interest! Thank you both Sarah and the beautiful man conducting the first tour! So sorry I cannot remember the name of this gentleman, I was so excited to be there, and being the first tour I missed it! So sorry!

The staff here were amazing and very friendly and I thank them for their kindness. The tour although very interesting was also depressing. What those women put up with was appalling. The conditions were horrendous. The factory was in operation from 1828 and 1856. I am so grateful that I was not born back then.

Fascinating place with its appalling but also amazing past beautifully remembered and represented. The tour of the site was really good and displayed a real depth of knowledge and compassion.

Sad but very informative. Very well thought out. Great presentation. A great example of how to make a historic site interesting when little more than walls are remaining.
