We visited Colca Canyon on a private tour, which we arranged a few days before arriving in Arequipa. It was easy to arrange the tour, and we visited the office the day prior to finalize the trip.
Our driver arrived at our hotel right on time at 5AM, and soon we picked up our guide Walter. We chose to start later and it was a great decision!
After a photo stop for volcanoes at 16,200 feet, then vicunas and alpacas, we had a quick breakfast stop at 8AM before we went to the Canyon. We had told Walter that we like to hike, so he took us on a great walk to several scenic viewpoints. The hike was challenging due to the 12,000 foot elevation, but it was well worth the effort!
And we saw condors flying! December is the start of the rainy season, so we weren't expecting to see them, but luck was with us.
After almost 2 hours of hiking, we headed to a thermal bath complex for a nice dip, which was great after the hike. Then we stopped off for lunch, which was super cheap but delicious.
We had a hard time staying awake for the trip home, but Ever did a great job despite all the traffic, and we were back at our hotel at 6PM.
I'm glad that we did a later tour because we had the Canyon all to ourselves. We would be very happy to use this tour agency again.
Note - all Colca Canyon tours require that you pay your own admission, which is S/70 per person. Breakfast is included, but lunch is not. Two crispy chicken sandwiches and an order of papas fritas cost S/48. The thermal baths cost S/15 per person. Bring cash.
