I came to Chefchaouen for a three night stay, and I chose to have a guided tour of the city on my day of arrival, so that I would have a better idea of the layout of the city during the remainder of my stay.
Mohamed picked me up from my hotel, and I felt immediately welcome. We started chatting, and he had lots of very interesting information about the city, its people, its culture, and also the surrounds.
Mohamed was born and raised very close to Chefchaouen but has lived many years right in town, so he definitely has all the inside scoop of what to see and where to go.
He led me through the narrowest alleyways and the smallest “tunnels” (passageways that I, had I been by myself, would never have considered to be a public thoroughfare), pointing out the best spots for taking pictures and always being mindful of the many hundreds of steps you’ll be climbing during the tour, offering frequent breaks to rest (even though he certainly doesn’t need any breaks as he’s very used to navigating the elevation changes) and making sure that you’re comfortable with the pace.
He can also lead you to a cluster of artists’ studios and workshops where you can see different handicrafts in action, from weaving sheep wool blankets on traditional looms, via tile working and mosaics, all the way to woodworking and painting. And if you wanted to buy some souvenir, you might find them here cheaper than in the main “tourist paths”.
I felt so happy with my experience with Mohamed, that I actually booked more tours with him to the surrounding areas around town during the remainder of my stay in Chefchaouen.
I definitely recommend Mohamed for any guiding needs in and around town.
