We arranged to visit the highlights of the Medina (marketplace) with Abdel. Very early on, we decided to have Abdel give us a full-day tour of Tangier, including some sites like the Cave of Hercules and the Casbah. We ate a wonderful lunch, met several interesting people along the way, and enjoyed hours of insightful and lively conversation. Abdel has been a certified guide for forty years and is knowledgeable in history, culture, and the backstory of Tangier, a superb and colorful place. My wife and I are seasoned travelers, and I can safely say Abdel is one of the best.

We loved our first day of touring to Asilah and Tangiers so much that we booked a second day to go to Tetouan and Chefchaouen. Depth of knowledge of the place and its history, excellent language skills, a genuine curiosity about the world, and a warm welcoming manner made spending two solid days touring a true delight. Well worth it to book our own tour, we saw so many interesting things at our own pace, and come back home with an affection and appreciation for beautiful (and delicious!) Morocco.

Initial intro drive and some history: Berbers, Phoenicians, Romans, Vandals, Arabs, Norse, Muslims, French, British, multi-power zone, French, playground for the rich and Beatniks - the usual. Nicest Muslim city, by far. Cleanest. Cape Spartel, the NW point of Morocco/Africa. Neat. You can see Spain past the old lighthouse. Nearby are The Caves of Hercules. The main attraction, though, is that, if you look a certain way, you can see the profile of an old Berber silhouetted in the mouth of the cave. With an open mouth, nose and Berber turban. Off to another “blue and white” town, Asilah, this time. Most fun thing was discovering a bakery for a neighborhood. If you don’t have an oven, or just want someone else to feel the heat, you can bring your dough to the bakery and, for a modest price, the baker will take care of things. You come back later and pick up the bread. Just outside the bakery, there was a man selling Kalinti, a mixture of chickpea and egg. (Picture below; Abdel on the left.) Then back to Tangier and La Terraza de la Medina, A fine, local lunch with no wine…not allowed.

Our guide was exceptional and highly knowledgeable and informative. He made it fun as well as showing us the hidden gems as he has lived in Tangiers all his life. We did the caves of Hercules - amazing, plus sampled the local cuisine in a very authentic Moroccan restaurant chosen by him. Excellent. We loved the camel ride - a one off for us. He took us down the labyrinth of streets that is the Kasba Blanca. Small lanes where the locals do their intricate embroidery on their local dress plus other beautiful mosaics. Saw and spoke to lots of fun locals who were charming. We all enjoyed our tour and would highly recommend him to anyone visiting Tangiers.

Abdel was a fantastic guide and made our visit unforgettable! He met us at the ferry from Tarifa and immediately made us feel welcome. Our journey started with a scenic drive to a panoramic viewpoint of the city, offering breathtaking views. From there, we explored so much: enjoying coffee at a charming restaurant, wandering through the Kashba, and diving into Moroccan history and culture with Abdel’s insightful commentary. The Medina was a highlight—Abdel took us to hidden spots we would have never found on our own. His explanations about the local religion, traditions, and lifestyle were both fascinating and enriching. A stop at a spice and oil shop added an extra touch, allowing us to learn about and purchase some amazing products for body and hair. Lunch was another standout—a delicious meal at a lovely spot. Abdel also guided us through a few stores, making time for some shopping. At the end of the day, he took us back to the port, leaving us with cherished memories. Abdel’s warmth, friendliness, and humility truly stood out. In the short time we spent together, we came to adore him and his passion for sharing his culture. We would highly recommend Abdel to anyone visiting and can’t wait to return and explore more with him. Thank you, Abdel!
