Overview

This educational museum is housed in the Saaihalle, one of the most beautiful buildings in Bruges, which increases its attraction to tourists even more.  It explains the history of the potato and fries and the different condiments with which they are habitually served.

Itinerary

    On the ground floor you can learn about the fascinating history of the potato which originated in Peru more than 10,000 years ago. On the first floor, the visitor can discover the history of the fries and how they came to Belgium and in the basement of the building, in the medieval cellars, it is even possible to sample some. The Frietmuseum completes the choice of museums in harmony with all the others which the town of Bruges has to offer and allows the visitor to discover the origins of one of the greatest Belgian culinary specialities, of which we are very proud: potato fries. The museum was created by the families Cédric and Eddy Van Belle who also created in Bruges the Belgian chocolate museum, Choco-Story, and the domestic lighting museum, Lumina Domestica.

Some tips for your visit

It’s a nice museum. Very informative. With that being said, I won’t bring little and young kids here, there is a lot of reading (which is interesting ), but just not for young kids. And there is maybe 1-2 interactive exhibits there. The cafe that has “famous Belgium frites” was not impressive at all. Just regular fries. Be aware there could be school groups visiting the museum and the cafe. You won’t get served your food till the entire school group is served (in our case it was 40 kids). We paid for our order and then were told we would have to wait till the group is serviced. If I would have been told this prior to placing the order, I obviously would not have ordered lunch at the museum cafe. Other than that, we had a good time and learnt a lot about potatoes

We had the best time here! You need to take it for what it is a museum of chips! Lots of interactive bits and bobs. The potato song was a particular high. Recommend visiting after a few beers to make the experience truly memorable!

Great experience with tasting the perfect Belgian fries

At last I was able to visit the museum with my teenage daughter. I enjoyed my visit a lot. I learned where our patatoes came from and how they were cultivated and so much more Off course I'm very interested in the 19th century and was very happy to see what they used to make the first Belgian fries. And I could find out how the perfect fries are fried and I tasted them as well in the cellar. They tasted perfectly. You could also watch them beeing made. It was a great experience for een Belgische frietjes fan.

Highly entertaining and worth the trip

We were looking forward to this museum before we even got to Bruges. It did not disappoint! We learned a lot and were highly entertained. The potato gun game was fun and the frite cabaret was incredible and we're still singing it days later. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.....mayonnaise.
