Feeling adventurous, we thought how about we scooter tour the Amalfi Coast? What an amazing experience! One that we will truly never forget and will tell our friends and family about for years to come.
The meetup location is very close to the Sorrento city center, making it easy to find and get to. Our guide Giuseppe (Joseph) spoke excellent English and was knowledgeable about the routes and stops. He was also kind in that I had forgotten my driving license, which is a must if you’re going to pilot the scooter during the tour. We made an unexpected stop at our hotel, changing our egress route out of Sorrento, and then we were on our way!
One very important note: driving a scooter on roads in Italy is not for the faint of heart. Please be sure you ready for winding roads, blind corners, and the physical endurance required to get there and back! Always stay to the right and allow others to pass. The locals are experts, so act accordingly and expect the unexpected.
Our stops included a walking tour of Positano, lunch in Amalfi, and a visit to Ravello, Italy’s music village. Personally, the latter was my favorite as we toured Villa Rudolph - highly recommended and worth the 7 euro admission price. The views of Minori, Maiori and Salerno from the gardens are fantastic!
Returning to Sorrento we made no stops except for fuel. This was our choice as Giuseppe kindly offered stops if we needed them. Here is where the endurance was needed. The endless switch-backs, traffic and attention required can be exhausting.
Please don’t let my warnings deter you. This is an amazing experience! As the scooter has no doors or windows, you will see and experience much more of the Amalfi Coast than in a car or boat. Not to mention that the scooter’s small footprint gives it a distinct advantage when it’s time to park and explore.
Treat yourself to what is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Ciao!
