Overview

Auckland is known as the City of Sails, but some think it should be called the City of Volcanoes! Gain insight into Auckland's unique volcanic geology and explore its rich Maori history on this half-day tour from Auckland. Explore the summits and craters of Auckland's youngest volcanoes, Mt. Wellington, Mangere Mountain, One Tree Hill, and Mt Eden, with a guide. Along the way, keep watch for native New Zealand wildlife and admire panoramic views over the city. At the end of the tour, we can drop you off anywhere in the city, at the museum or zoo, or Mission Bay beach. Please note, volcanoes visited are inactive.

Itinerary

  • Achilles Point

    Views of the volcanic islands of the Hauraki Gulf, including Rangitoto and Motukorea. Learn about the arrival of the early Maori settlers to New Zealand. Views of the city.

  • Mt. Wellington

    Walk to the crater near the peak of Mt Wellington, a 10,000 year old volcano. Learn about the Maori settlements on the volcanoes, and an introduction to the Auckland Volcanic Field. Option to enter the steep-sided crater.

    45 minutes

  • Mangere Mountain

    Walk around the craters of Mangere Mountain. Learn more about the large Maori settlement on the volcano. See views of the Manukau Harbour, and a few more volcanic features.

  • One Tree Hill (Maungakiekie)

    Enjoy views of One Tree Hill as you are given a summary of New Zealand history, focusing on the early interaction between the British and Maori. Then drive around Cornwall Park, seeing some more volcanic craters and some sheep.

  • Mount Eden

    Walk around the crater of Mt Eden. Enjoy the magnificent views of the city and the surrounding volcanoes from the summit.

Mike was a great guide. Very knowledgeable about the geology and volcanic history of the area. Enjoyed seeing the great views of Auckland especially from Mt Eden. Would have liked to go to top of Wellington but had time constraints. Loved the bakery stop for a coffee and pastry. Kept to a designated timeline. Would definitely recommend this tour if you are interested in the volcanic characteristics of the area.

Very interesting tour hitting four volcano peaks across Auckland. Mike did a great job teaching us about the unique nature of Auckland and its underlying volcano field as well as sprinkling in some Māori and NZ history and culture. No spoilers but the volcanoes really are different than typical ones around the world. Beautiful views from multiple spots with a nice (but not strenuous) hike up a couple of the peaks.

My wife and I are 'Volcano Nerds" and have traveled around the world just to experience them, in Iceland, Hawaii, Italy, Yellowstone, Japan to name a few. We have taken many tours, but have never met a guide as knowledgeable as Mike. His knowledge is deep and exceeded our expectations. He answered every question with confidence.
