Overview

Guided tour to Italica, the first Roman city founded in the Iberian peninsula and the birthplace of the Emperors Trajan and Hadrian. The main building on this archaeological site is the amphitheatre, the third largest in the world with a capacity for 25,000 spectators. Italica is also well known by its mosaics and 'domus'. Then, visit 'San Isidoro del Campo' - a restored Medieval fortress monastery, all by minivan. Episodes from the Game of Thrones television series were filmed in and around the Roman ruins of Itálica. Most of it, the Roman amphitheater was the setting of the Dragonpit, where several key characters held a summit in season seven.

Tour of Italica and the monastery of San Isodoro del Campo

Our tour brought us from Plaza del Duque across the both canal and the original Guadalquivir river to the estuary to the site of the ancient Roman settlement Italica. Our guide Jose-Luis explained how the Phoenicians originally settled there, but it was the Romans in the 2nd Century AD that chose Italica because of the richness of the land for cultivation, the waters and its fishes. The amphitheatre is very impressive, but the tour of the town streets and houses was amazing. Much of the original mosaics are still in place and are delightful. Our tour also brought us to the gothic Monastery which is nearby which contains the splendid early baroque and baroque altarpieces and frescoes dating back to the 16th century.

Really enjoyed the tour of Italica. The amphitheatre is impressive and the mosaics worth looking at. Carlos Leon was a very engaging and enthusiastic guide. Less interested in the monastery but still worth a visit.

- José Luis our tour guide picked us up directly from our hotel. - Car was super comfy, clean and spacious. - As someone who has always loved hearing historical facts and curiosities, it was an absolute delight to have José as he guided us throughout Italica. Learnt so much from José in just one single morning. - Went with my elderly Mom; José was mindful and was constantly on the lookout for my Mom to watch her step. - Italica was a huge site but José walked in a friendly accessible manner that allowed us to walk through the entire site quickly and viewing all the best sites/highlights. - Will absolutely have José Luis take us for future tours to Seville/Cordoba when we return next time!

We highly recommend taking this tour. The ancient Roman city of Italica is a quick 15 minute drive from Seville. It’s an incredible archeological site. The tour will also take you to a beautiful medieval monastery. Our tour guide Alberto is highly educated on the history, art, architecture and significance at both sites. He made the tour very enjoyable. You will not be disappointed.
