Itinerary

  • Paradesa Borneo

Take a detour from the city life to explore the rural part of Kuching, then get hands-on lessons in Sarawakian cuisine! Go for a morning ride to explore centuries-old villages along the banks of Sarawak River. Take in the tranquil atmosphere and picturesque sights, then immerse yourselves in the wonderful world of Sarawakian cuisine with a hands-on cooking class! The morning ride takes you to the Malay Kampongs lining the banks of the great Sarawak River. Just minutes from the city centre is a stretch of idyllic villages--the third oldest Malay settlement in Kuching, dating back centuries. Known for their skills with ships and boats, the Malay people of old loved to build their homes near water. As we ride into the first village just beyond the Old State Mosque, the city noises start to fade as the soothing calmness of village life takes over. Old wooden houses on stilts line both sides of the road, with more modern homes blending in equally as well in the quiet neighborhood. There are seven villages altogether on this side of the river, starting from Kampung Bintangor closest to the urban centre, to Kampung Kudei just a stone’s throw from the Satok Bridge, which takes you to the other side. After Kampung Kudei, we head up onto the Satok Bridge and cross the river on it, to our next stop—the Satok Market. This is one of the main markets in Kuching offering fresh produce for sale, as well as a plethora of animal products, mainly fish. Afterwards, we ride on through another stretch of villages which leads to a jetty. From the jetty, we get aboard a river taxi known locally as ‘sampan’ or ‘perahu tambang’, a centuries-old but still popular mode of transport for going back and forth between both sides of the river. Take in the scenery, observe the contrast between urban and rural Kuching just across from each other--as you cruise to Haji Omar jetty, a short walk across the street from our start point. Once we’re on the other side, it’s time for the highlight of the tour! The kitchen is where the magic happens! After exploring the rural parts of Kuching and seeing where the ingredients in Sarawak’s delightful cuisine come from, it’s time to cook! Learn to prepare Sarawak laksa chicken along with the famed jungle fern, as well as kerabu (the local way of preparing salad), meant to be enjoyed with rice--a staple element in our cuisine. Chop, blend and stir; then tuck in to your heart’s content!

Great day out

Published on Jan, 2025

We did this bike ride and cooking class with Farhah. We had the best time, learnt lots, laughed and ate some amazing food which was quite different to anything we have had from the local food halls. We rode through several local villages, stopped at a beautiful house that was the home of a high official to the last rajah, browsed through the local wet market, passed by more traditional malay houses, got on a boat, (bikes and us), then rode to the Lamin restaurant where the head chef helped us cook our lunch. Today's food was heavily influenced by the indigenous people of Sarawak rather than food influenced by Chinese, Indian, West Malaysia, Singapore etc . we have been enjoying. We had Ayam Pansuh (bamboo chicken), fish soup orang ulu style, Kerang Midin (jungle fern salad), Nasi Goreng Daun Ubi (tapioca leaves fried rice) and wild mango sambal. All very delicious. It was hard to pick a favourite. If you are looking for something a little different to do whilst in Kuching, we can thoroughly recommend this tour. Thank you Farhah for a fantastic day and for looking after us so well.

Great explanation in Kuching

It’s a great experience in both of biking and cooking. Although the weather was bad, pouring occasionally, Aura was well prepared for us. Cooking 5 dishes with locals and enjoyed them as our lunch was great too. Highly recommended!

Great tour led by Ayra

Published on Dec, 2024

Had a wonderful experience led by our guide Ayra! Biking around was a great way to discover Kuching - appreciated that this tour brought us to places we otherwise would not go to, like the villages and a morning wet market. Getting to try different fruits in the market, that the guide helped order, was a nice treat too. Tour involves cycling on the road but the guide will skillfully lead the way and help signal so I felt safe throughout. Would definitely recommend!

Sarawak is truly underrated today. Just walking in the neighbourhood streets of Wayang in the morning, we are pleasantly greeted by numerous food joints, storytelling wall murals, clean walkways and friendly locals. Everyone speaks English so there is no language barrier to understanding Kuching's gentle hospitality. A wonderful morning with Delilah, our lovely and friendly guide.

Yummy food and great time with Kelvin Lu

Published on Sep, 2019

I arrived there is 2 days in kuching and I was scared to test a new kind of food and to shy to ask people.. so book this tour was for me a step to know more about kuching and the culture and religion and the food specialities from there. Discovery all the arts and village and market around kuching. I spent 4 hours with Kelvin and he took the time to explain to me all the history of kuching. He was looking after me and I not feeling like we need to follow a prepared tour it was more like discovery the city with your friend. We walked in the city, took the bike during one hour around the waterfront and took the boat to come back at the office. So it was a good time and very diversified during all the tour. So if you are a solo traveler and you would like discovery more about the city, the history of kuching, discovery food and go to some places where you can't go by yourself you can shoose this tour. And if you are a family or friends it's the same things. Thanks Kelvin Lu Ps : don't eat before the tour! Too much yummy food!!!
