Our guide, Ignacio, picked us up at our hotel and we walked through the Christmas market on our way the Royal Palace. Along the way, he pointed out buildings of particular interest and importance while noting the history and architectural style of various landmark buildings. Ignacio engaged us with the history of Spain from Roman times until the present day. As someone who has studied European art and history, it was wonderful to talk with someone so knowledgeable and enthusiastic. Out walk through the Royal Palace was amazing. Ignacio didn't just point out a few pictures and statues; he told us the history, the characters, and what Spain was like in the period related to what we were seeing at the time. He explained the significance and symbolism of the various rooms as well as what the artist and patron was trying to demonstrate. It was a unique tour through the palace in that Ignacio showed us what would happen at a modern state visit. I had a lot of questions about the differences between the English and Spanish monarchies, both historically and presently and Ignacio was able to offer a lot of insight.
After a break for a bite to eat and coffee, we took a taxi to the Prado Museum. It was an incredibly beautiful and inspirational space. I enjoyed seeing paintings, sculptures and decorative pieces that I was familiar with and those that were new to me. Ignacio has a deep knowledge of the history of the museum and its collections. He was able to tie everything together in a way that showed his love and appreciation for art and his enthusiasm in sharing his knowledge with us. For those who want to take their time and really learn and appreciate both of these magnificent landmarks, this private tour is a must.
