My wife and I recently did a slum tour in New Delhi, and it was one of the most impactful experiences of our travels. We went in with open minds, but the tour exceeded our expectations in terms of depth, education, and human connection.
Our guide was incredibly knowledgeable and respectful, giving us insight into the daily lives of the residents while ensuring that the experience remained ethical and non-exploitative. What stood out the most was the resilience, warmth, and sense of community we witnessed. Far from being a place of hopelessness, the slum was full of hardworking people striving for better opportunities, children eager to learn, and small businesses making the most of their resources.
The tour also highlighted some of the challenges faced by the community, from lack of sanitation to limited access to education, but it never felt voyeuristic or invasive. Instead, it was a chance to learn, engage, and appreciate the strength of those living in these conditions.
If you're in New Delhi and looking for an experience that goes beyond the usual tourist spots, I highly recommend this tour. It was humbling, educational, and, most importantly, done in a way that respects the dignity of the residents.
